There’s a joke in the new movie musical The Prom that might not make a lot of sense to you if you didn’t see the Broadway version.

When the Broadway stars in the movie arrive at a motel in small-town Indiana, the clerk doesn’t recognize Meryl Streep and James Corden‘s characters Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman, but he does recognize Andrew Rannells‘ Trent Oliver.

Trent, a fictional character, is best known for playing “that guy” on the ’90s sitcom Talk to the Hand.

The hotel clerk that tells Trent that he recognizes him as the star of Talk to the Hand and notes that the show is on “right after Two of a Kind.” What made this line so funny on Broadway was that Trent was played by Christopher Sieber, who starred on Two of a Kind as the Olsen Twins‘ single father. The scene was like a wink-wink moment between the actors and the audience and it always got a ton of laughter.

None of the stars from the Broadway version were included in the film version, though the movie still brings the show’s magic to life!

A brand new production of the classic Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical Company is coming to Broadway next week and here’s your first look at the cast in costume!

The new take on the musical features gender-swapped casting with Tony winner Katrina Lenk taking on the role of Bobbie, originally Bobby in previous productions. Patti LuPone is playing Joanne and will sing the iconic song “The Ladies Who Lunch.”

Here’s a brief synopsis for the show: At Bobbie’s 35th birthday party, all her friends are wondering why isn’t she married? Why can’t she find the right man? And, why can’t she settle down and have a family?

Also starring in the show are Matt Doyle as Jamie, Christopher Fitzgerald as David, Christopher Sieber as Harry, Jennifer Simard as Sarah, Terence Archie as Larry, Etai Benson as Paul, Nikki Renee Daniels as Jenny, Claybourne Elder as Andy, Greg Hildreth as Peter, Kyle Dean Massey as Theo, Rashidra Scott as Susan, and Bobby Conte Thornton as P.J.

Company, directed by two-time Tony winner Marianne Elliott, begins preview performances on March 2 ahead of an official opening night on March 22, which happens to be Sondheim‘s 90th birthday!

The Stephen Sondheim musical Company is returning to Broadway next year for a gender-bent revival and the full cast has been announced!

Tony winner Katrina Lenk will be playing Bobbie, a character that was previously referred to as Bobby and played by a man in past productions. Patti LuPone will be making a highly anticipated return to the New York stage as Joanne.

Director Marianne Elliott collaborated with Sondheim to update the musical and bring the story into the 21st century. In Company, musical theatre’s most iconic bachelor becomes a bachelorette. The stars of The Prom showed how Broadway can be diverse and inclusive during their performance, which ended in a kiss between two women.

Caitlin and Brooks Ashmanskas, both nominated for their work in the musical, kicked things off with a performance of “Tonight Belongs to You.” The full cast then joined in for “It’s Time to Dance.”

Also featured in the performance were Beth Leavel, Christopher Sieber, Angie Schworer, and more!
