Bella Thorne Remembers Being 'Pitted Against' 'Shake It Up' Co-Star Zendaya

Bella Thorne is opening up about her friendship with her former Shake It Up co-star Zendaya.

In an interview with Us Weekly, the 23-year-old actress recalled being pitted against her castmate.

“We had to deal with that so much on Shake It Up,” Bella said. “It’s like we said [in] a couple interviews when we were younger, how we explained how in the first season we weren’t friends and it took us those other two seasons of becoming so close. [It was hard] not having someone pitted against you [before] and then all of a sudden, now everyone is pitting you against each other. That fed into our heads. It made us not [be] friends in that first season.”

Bella revealed that their relationship improved after a “beautiful talk in the middle of a sound stage” on the set of Good Luck Charlie.

She explained, “We were really able to put our cards out on the table and understanding each other.”

Zendaya’s amazing. I f—king love her,” Bella added. “She’s always been amazing and she’s always going to be amazing. I’m just happy that people see that. She’s getting the recognition she deserves. That just makes me so happy. I feel like when people put us against each other, it’s just like, … ‘Why are you doing this? Is it just because we’re women?’”

Florence Pugh recently came to Bella‘s defense after fans had a negative reaction to a comment she left on Florence‘s page. Click here to see what she said.

Why is 'Malcom & Marie' in Black & White? Zendaya Explains the Choice

Zendaya‘s new movie Malcolm & Marie is currently the number one movie on Netflix and she’s opening up about the decision to film it in black and white.

The entire movie features just two actors, her and John David Washington, and they filmed it right at the beginning of the pandemic while quarantining with the entire crew.

Zendaya opened up about writer and director Sam Levinson‘s black and white choice while being interviewed on GMA this week.

“Well, you know, other than the fact that it’s just pretty, it’s beautiful, it adds timelessness to it, but also… there was a thought also about reclaiming the narrative of black and white Hollywood and Black actors really having their moment at that time,” Zendaya said.

“We weren’t as present in the black and white era,” she continued. “A lot of filmmakers have already done this before, a lot of Black filmmakers, so it’s not necessarily a new idea, but we did want to pay tribute to that era and reclaim that beauty and that elegance with these two Black actors.”

Zendaya Says She's 'Eternally Grateful' for 'Malcolm & Marie' Crew Ahead of the Movie's Release

Zendaya is just as excited as we are that Malcolm & Marie will be debuting in just a few short hours!

The 24-year-old Emmy-winning actress took to Twitter to share her gratitude for the crew – which she calls “family” – for putting this movie together in such a short period of time during the pandemic.

If you didn’t know, Malcolm & Marie was written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and it was made in secret during June and July 2020. All proper protocols were followed to keep everyone safe during the pandemic and the cast only features Zendaya and co-star John David Washington!

“Full of excitement and nervousness as this lil movie we made in lockdown with people I love is coming out in the next hour,” Zendaya started. “Nervousness for a few reasons. Normally I’m pretty self-critical and that leads me to be far too fearful to make things myself or trust myself enough to even try.”

She continued, “This is really my first time believing that maybe I could. This is my first time being a leading lady, but also my first time being this creatively involved in something, producing something, co-financing something, owning something and sharing it all with my crew.”

“We made this as a family, shot it in 14 days with a 22 person crew I am eternally grateful for. For their talent, their time, their hard work, and their willingness to believe in this film,” Zendaya added. “If there’s anything to learn from this year, and I hope from our little movie it’s gratitude for every moment and every person we get to love.”

Zendaya concluded by writing, “All that being said, on behalf of our little crew of 22, we hope you laugh (please laugh lol) and cry and hopefully enjoy this little thing we made with a whole lot of love. Love Maree (I spell mine with two E’s)”

In a recent interview, Zendaya addressed some criticism the movie has received.

“He’s become one of my closest friends, and he is lovely and so talented. I think my favorite part was when we would have these, like, dance parties in my room, where I would leave the door open, Timothée would come in with his little speaker, and then everybody would start coming in and we’d just start dancing,” she revealed of their friendship.

She revealed the whole cast would come in and dance, including Javier Bardem.

“Listen, he peeked in and he was grooving. I was like, ‘Okay, Javier!’ He had the moves. I was very impressed,” she added.

Zendaya recently opened up about the age difference between her and another co-star. Find out what she said!

Zendaya Addresses Age Gap Between She & 'Malcolm & Marie' Co-Star John David Washington

Zendaya is addressing some backlash regarding her new movie.

While promoting her Netflix movie Malcolm & Marie, the 24-year-old Emmy winner addressed the age gap between she and co-star John David Washington.

If you didn’t know, there is a 12-year age difference between Zendaya and the 36-year-old actor.

For Zendaya, she believes it’s because people are still fixated on the fact that “I’ve played a 16-year-old since I was 16.”

“You have to remember, also, people grew up with me as a child,” Zendaya shared with E!’s Daily Pop. “It’s like watching, I guess, your younger sibling now, you know, they’re grown…So it’s hard for people to wrap around the idea that I am grown in real life. You know, even though I do play a teenager on television still.”

John has also addressed the age gap recently. You can read what he said here.

In another new interview, Zendaya shared her thoughts on being considered a “Disney kid.”

Zendaya Says Being a 'Disney Kid' Is Part Of Her 'Heritage'

Zendaya isn’t ashamed of being labeled a Disney kid.

The 24-year-old Euphoria actress spoke to Carey Mulligan about her time on the channel as a star of several of their television shows and revealed that her time on Disney is a part of who she is.

“You surely can’t think of yourself as a Disney kid now,” Carey noted in their interview for Variety‘s Actors on Actors while mentioning Zendaya‘s recent Emmy win.

But Zendaya doesn’t mind it.

“The thing is, I am. And to a degree, I am grateful for that. That’s where I started, and I learned so much from that experience,” she shared.

Zendaya added, “It’s just kind of been this slow progression, and I am happy that it’s all been to prove it to myself and not to anybody else, you know? I embrace it a little bit. It’s part of my heritage to a degree.”

The two actresses also spoke about Carey‘s new movie, Promising Young Woman, during the video interview.

Recently, Zendaya has been in Atlanta filming for Spider-Man 3. See the newest set pics here!
