Zendaya Looks Back at Giuliana Rancic's 'Outrageously Offensive' Comments About Her Dreadlocks at Oscars 2015

Zendaya is looking back at the controversy surrounding her hair at the 2015 Oscars.

While attending the awards show at just 18-years-old, the actress wore her hair in dreadlocks.

After the event, Giuliana Rancic slammed Zendaya‘s hair, saying that Zendaya‘s hair looked like it “smells like patchouli oil or weed.”

Zendaya then called out the 46-year-old former Fashion Police co-host for her “outrageously offensive” comments about her hair.

“There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful,” Zendaya wrote at the time. “Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe. Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect.”

Zendaya added, “To say that an 18-year-old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or ‘weed’ is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. I don’t usually feel the need to respond to negative things but certain remarks cannot go unchecked.”

Giuliana later apologized to Zendaya, tweeting, “I’m sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race and NEVER would!!!”

Now at 24-years-old, Zendaya is looking back on the situation.

“That’s how change happens,” Zendaya shared with W Magazine. “And it made me think, ‘How could I always have a lasting impact on what people saw and associated with People of Color?’”

Zendaya Looks Back on the Moment She Realized She Had Power in Hollywood

Zendaya is opening up about her career in Hollywood.

The 24-year-old Spider Man actress appeared on The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast and reflected on her time as a Disney Channel star and her latest film, Malcolm & Marie.

Zendaya revealed that after Shake It Up had wrapped she agreed to do another show with the network, but only on her terms.

“That was my first time realizing that I could have a little bit of power and request things that I wanted,” she shared. “It was hugely important to me that it was a Black family being showcased. I just thought that that was important from the Disney Channel, considering that I know I watched it as a kid, and what I connected to the most was That’s So Raven. I think it’s always important for kids to see themselves reflected on the screen, and when you’re making child programming you have a little bit of an extra responsibility there.”

She also opened up about winning the youngest-ever winner of the best actress in a drama series during the 2020 Emmy Awards.

“I still can’t wrap my mind around it,” Zendaya said. “I’m very grateful for Euphoria and for Rue and for the entire experience. It really allowed me to open myself up to so many things and emotionally tap into things that I just didn’t know were there.”

Earlier this week, Zendaya‘s Spider Man co-star Tom Holland revealed that the actress had given him some valuable advice in handling fan interactions.

Tom Holland Says Zendaya Gave Him Some Advice After Coming Across As 'A Bit of A D-ck' to Fans

Zendaya is offering Tom Holland some tips on meeting fans!

The 24-year-old Spider-Man actor revealed that his co-star gave him some valuable advice about handling fan interactions in a recent interview with British GQ.

“Talking to Zendaya‘s helped me a lot, actually,” Tom said. “I used to come across sometimes as a bit of a d-ck to fans, mainly as I was always so surprised that they’d want a picture with me or signature or whatever.”

He explained, “I’d have the typical Londoner reaction, one of instant suspicion: ‘Why are you talking to me?’ Zendaya spotted this and quickly told me that this sort of reaction was going to be more aggro than just smiling and taking the picture. She totally changed the way I am able to be more comfortable in public.”

Tom also shared whether or not the upcoming third Spider-Man film would be his last in the series.

“I hope not, but I don’t have another contract – yet,” the actor revealed. “As I was cast as Spider-Man six years ago, I have always had the contract there as a safety net. I would never need to worry as, next year, I always had another Spider-Man film – but not any more. I’m just looking at my phone waiting for it to ring with a new contract.”

He went on to add that he is “one hundred percent” to another movie and said, “We’d need to keep the same core team. The director, Jon Watts, is as much Spider-Man as I am. Zendaya, Jacob [Batalon].”

Zendaya Alters Interview Question to Remove the Gender

A moment from Zendaya‘s Vanity Fair video interview is going viral!

The 24-year-old Emmy Award winner was featured in Vanity Fair for its annual Hollywood Issue and took part in a video Q&A titled “The Proust Questionnaire.”

“What is the quality you most like in a man?” she was asked, but Zendaya quickly rephrased the question to take out the gender. “I most like in a person, how about that?” she said, before answering.

“It’s such a big question,” she said. “What is the quality I most like in someone? I would say, ‘kindness’ is kind of not the best way to describe it, but some people are just good people, and you can just feel it. And I don’t know how to explain that, but there’s this little spark they have, or this little special thing that they have, that just you feel safe and happy around them. I don’t know what that is, but some people have it, and it’s special.”

The next question was then, “What is the quality you most like in a woman?” and Zendaya responded, “Well, I guess that’s the same answer.”

If you missed it, Zendaya and her Spider-Man co-stars went viral this week over seemingly fake Spider-Man title reveals.
