Pharrell Williams Weighs in on Taylor Swift's Masters Battle With Scooter Braun

Pharrell Williams is weighing in.

The 47-year-old “Happy” music superstar spoke about Taylor Swift‘s ongoing battle with Scooter Braun over the rights to her masters in an interview with Variety.

“There’s no other industry out there in the world where a start-up gets off the ground and doesn’t own the trademark — it just doesn’t make sense. It may be legal, but it’s still a crime. If a bank walks away with ownership of a company and the trademark, how much should a creator really be participating? The artist should always have the lion’s share of their creation,” he said of the imperative for artists to retain rights of their music.

“It’s really unfortunate, you know. There was room for [Scooter] to make his acquisition because that’s just the way the business is, and I felt for [Taylor] and not being able to be in control of it. There’s a system in place that’s just all wrong. He’s a businessman and he also represents artists, so from his point of view he’s just making an acquisition of something that he felt would be a good investment. But the artist should have the opportunity [to retain ownership], and I don’t know whether she did or she didn’t,” he said.

“I just know that the system is wired in ways that is oftentimes not always fair to the creator. I think it should be the norm that the creators retain their rights.”

At the same time, it was recently revealed that Scooter Braun sold Taylor Swift‘s masters to another entity.

Taylor Swift's Fans Think There's a Scooter Braun Reference in New Commercial with Her Re-Recorded Music

Taylor Swift has released her first piece of re-recorded music in a new commercial that was created by her friend Ryan Reynolds. Fans think they’ve found a reference to Scooter Braun in the ad!

As you probably know by now, Taylor has been in a feud with Scooter after he purchased her former record label and then recently sold her masters for $300 million.

In the Match commercial, which features Taylor‘s re-recorded version of “Love Story,” a fallen scooter is seen next to a dumpster with the number “6″ on the wall next to it.

Taylor‘s fans think the “6″ refers to the six albums that she is re-recording after they were sold by Scooter - Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, and reputation.

The Investment Fund That Bought Taylor Swift's Master Recordings Just Released a Statement

Shamrock Capital Content Fund, the investment fund that purchased Taylor Swift‘s master recordings from Scooter Braun, has released a statement after news of the purchase went public.

The fund reportedly paid north of $300 million to purchase Taylor‘s masters from her days at Big Machine Label Group.

In a letter that she wrote to fans, Taylor said that she attempted to buy the masters from Scooter and then she even considered partnering with Shamrock, until she found out that Scooter would still profit from her music under the deal with Shamrock.

Now, Shamrock has provided this statement to JustJared.com:

Taylor Swift is a transcendent artist with a timeless catalog. We made this investment because we believe in the immense value and opportunity that comes with her work. We fully respect and support her decision and, while we hoped to formally partner, we also knew this was a possible outcome that we considered. We appreciate Taylor’s open communication and professionalism with us these last few weeks. We hope to partner with her in new ways moving forward and remain committed to investing with artists in their work.”

Taylor Swift Comments on Scooter Braun Selling Her Masters, Says She Tried to Buy Them

Taylor Swift is speaking out following Scooter Braun‘s sale of her master recordings.

It was reported on Monday (November 16) that Scooter sold the masters for Taylor‘s first six albums to an investment fund and the deal was worth more than $300 million.

You might remember that Scooter‘s Ithaca Holdings LLC acquired Taylor‘s former record label Big Machine Label Group last year for an estimated $300 million. Now, he has essentially made a full return on his investment while still owning the entire label. Make sure to check out our full timeline of everything that happened between the two stars.

Taylor says that she attempted to purchase the masters from Scooter, but his team demanded that she sign an NDA before beginning the process.

“So, I would have to sign a document that would silence me forever before I could even have a chance to bid on my own work. My legal team said that this is absolutely NOT normal, and they’ve never seen an NDA like this presented unless it was to silence an assault accuser by paying them off. He would never even quote my team a price. These master recordings were not for sale to me,” Taylor said in the letter to her fans.

Taylor says a private equity company contacted her about buying her masters from Scooter and they wanted to partner with her, but when Taylor found out that the deal will still allow Scooter to profit from her music, she couldn’t continue.
