Taylor Swift Addresses Scooter Braun & 'Toxic Male Privilege' During Powerful Speech at Billboard Event

Taylor Swift is finally addressing Scooter Braun directly during a public speech and she’s calling out the overall “toxic male privilege” in the music industry.

On the eve of her 30th birthday, Taylor accepted the Woman of the Decade Award at Billboard’s Women in Music event on Thursday night (December 12) at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.

During the speech, Taylor called out the “unregulated world of private equity coming in and buying our music as if it’s real estate—as if it’s an app or a shoe line.”

“This just happened to me without my approval, consultation, or consent. After I was denied the chance to purchase my music outright, my entire catalog was sold to Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings in a deal that I’m told was funded by the Soros family, 23 Capital, and that Carlyle Group. Yet, to this day, none of these investors have bothered to contact me or my team directly, to perform their due diligence on their investment,” Taylor said. “On their investment in me. To ask how I might feel about the new owner of my art, the music I wrote, the videos I created, photos of me, my handwriting, my album designs.”

“And of course, Scooter never contacted me or my team to discuss it prior to the sale or even when it was announced. I’m fairly certain he knew exactly how I would feel about it, though, and let me just say that the definition of toxic male privilege in our industry is people saying ‘but he’s always been nice to me’ when I’m raising valid concerns about artists and their right to own their music. And of course he’s nice to you. If you’re in this room, you have something he needs,” Taylor added. “The fact is that private equity enabled this man to think, according to his own social media post, that he could ‘buy me.’ But I’m obviously not going willingly. Yet the most amazing thing was to discover that it would be the women in our industry who would have my back and show me the most vocal support at one of the most difficult times, and I will never, ever forget it. Like, ever.”

Taylor asked the people in the audience to “stand as an example for someone else in the next generation that loves the same thing that we love.”

She ended her speech by saying, “No matter what else enters the conversation we will always bring it back to music. As for me, lately I’ve been focusing less on what they say I can’t do and more on doing whatever the hell I want.”

Everything You Need to Know About Taylor Swift's AMAs 2019 Performance & Behind-the-Scenes Drama - A Timeline

Taylor Swift is set to appear at the 2019 American Music Awards to accept the Artist of the Decade Award – but her performance, and the very public drama happening behind-the-scenes – is all everyone is talking about.

After Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta, of Taylor‘s former label Big Machine Records, acquired her song masters in a deal earlier in 2019 (much to Taylor‘s dismay), the parties have been locked in a longstanding disagreement.

Their professional drama reignited in mid-November a back-and-forth of statements about whether Taylor is, in fact, allowed to perform her old songs during her AMAs medley, as well as using them in an upcoming Netflix documentary, with lots of stars weighing in and taking sides.

We’ve rounded up all the headlines that have emerged ever since Taylor first spoke out about allegedly being unable to perform her old songs.

Check out the timeline of events inside…

Taylor Swift Says Scooter Braun & Scott Borchetta Won’t Let Her Perform Her Old Music at AMAs 2019

In an Instagram post on November 14, Taylor Swift says that she’s been blocked from performing her old music at the AMAs and using her old songs in an upcoming Netflix doc. She calls upon her fans and famous friends to let Scooter and Scott know how they feel about this decision.

Many stars, including Selena Gomez and Halsey, stick up for Taylor upon the announcement and call out Scott and Scooter for this decision.

Big Machine Records Denies Taylor Swift’s Claim of Blocking Her Music: ‘The Narrative You Have Created Does Not Exist’

Big Machine Records issues a statement denying Taylor‘s statement, claiming that she is creating a false narrative, that Taylor allegedly owes them money, and that she was never blocked from performing her music at the event.

Taylor Swift’s Rep Issues Response to Big Machine Records: ‘They’re Trying to Deflect’

Taylor‘s longtime publicist hits back at the Big Machine statement, claiming that the label is trying to deflect, with apparent evidence of email exchanges and direct statements from Scott blocking her from performing old songs, adding that it’s the label that apparently owes money, not Taylor.

Scooter Braun said he didn’t want to participate in a social media war with Taylor Swift, but he finally decided to write her an open letter after his family received death threats, which are seemingly from her fans.

The 38-year-old music mogul and talent manager took to Instagram to share his impassioned letter in which he expressed that he doesn’t want any violence to occur because of this situation.

Scooter says that he has been trying to get in touch with Taylor ever since her first open letter five months ago, but he hasn’t been able to get a hold of her. He wrote, “It almost feels as if you have no interest in ever resolving the conflict. At this point with safety becoming a concern I have no choice other than to publicly ask for us to come together and try to find a resolution. I have tried repeatedly through your representatives to achieve a solution but unfortunately here we are. This game of telephone isn’t working.”

In the letter, Scooter also confirmed that he believes Taylor should be able to perform her music at the AMAs.

Scooter Braun Finally Addresses Taylor Swift Controversy After Months of Silence

Scooter Braun is speaking out publicly on the Taylor Swift controversy for the first time, nearly five months after he purchased her former record label Big Machine.

After the purchase, Taylor wrote an open letter in which she expressed that she has never been a fan of Scooter as she felt bullied by him and his client Justin Bieber.

The feud between Taylor, Scooter, and Big Machine’s Scott Borchetta continued last week when she told fans that the label was blocking her from performing old songs at the 2019 American Music Awards. After her fans went on attack-mode, Big Machine released a statement saying that an agreement was reached so that Taylor could perform the old songs.

Scooter finally spoke out, without even saying Taylor‘s name, during the 2019 Entertainment Industry Conference, co-sponsored by Variety and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. He basically made it known that he wants to sit down with the singer and have a conversation.

“I haven’t talked about this in six months. Not once. I haven’t made a statement about it,” he said (via Variety). “When there’s a lot of things being said and a lot of different opinions, yet the principals haven’t had a chance to speak to each other, there’s a lot of confusion. I’m not going to go into details here, because it’s just not my style. I just think we live in a time of toxic division, and of people thinking that social media is the appropriate place to air out on each other and not have conversations. And I don’t like politicians doing it. I don’t like anybody doing it, and if that means that I’ve got to be the bad guy longer, I’ll be the bad guy longer, but I’m not going to participate.”
