Today marks the 15th anniversary of the day that The Notebook hit theaters back in 2004 and we’re taking a moment to relive Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling‘s real-life romance!
The former couple met on the set of the movie and they started dating in 2005, long after the movie had left theaters.
Rachel and Ryan famously shared a kiss on stage at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards while accepting the award for Best Kiss and they later shared plenty of kisses on the red carpet. They later split in 2007, but remained friends.
Nick Cassavetes, the director of The Notebook, opened up on the film’s 10th anniversary about how Rachel and Ryan actually didn’t get along on set at first.
“Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not. And Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here,’” he told VH1. “And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.’”
Nick added, “It got better after that, you know? They had it out… I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open. The rest of the film wasn’t smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing.”
Ryan has been with Eva Mendes since 2011 and they share two children. Rachel has been dating screenwriter Jamie Linden since 2016 and they welcomed a son last year.
