Ryan Sutter, who you may know as the winner of Trista‘s season of The Bachelorette many years ago, has been suffering from a mystery illness for months now.
The 46-year-old former reality star and firefighter opened up about his illness in November of 2020 and now, he finally has a diagnosis and is ready to share.

The Bachelorette star Trista Sutter has revealed her husband Ryan is battling a mysterious illness and this has been ongoing for months.
“This week is usually one of my favorites. Creating memories with family, honoring traditions, filling our bellies with the tastiest of treats, and recognizing our blessings. I wrote a book on gratitude after all. It’s for that reason, though, that I haven’t posted. I know I should be thankful, but I don’t want to be fake. And, I’m struggling. This guy…my rock, my best friend, my hero, my love…is struggling. Not everyday, and not to the point that he can’t work or cook or exercise or be with family, but enough. We’ve been struggling for months. Struggling to get answers,” Trista revealed.
“And this week, we got an answer that would normally be the best answer of all good answers. We found out that Ryan doesn’t have cancer. A HUGE relief…without a doubt, especially after fighting to find a doctor to take symptoms that lined up with lymphoma seriously and advocating for the scans to rule it out. But part of us was wanting a diagnosis. Wanting to be able to fight for him to be cured instead of fighting for an answer,” Trista continued.
She continued, “How messed up is that? Don’t worry, I know. It’s messed up. But, that’s where we are. In a holding pattern of not knowing. And believe me…I know it could be worse, so for that, I am thankful. Thankful to not have to be separated from a loved one who is dying due to COVID. Thankful to not have 2 children with a cancer diagnosis. Thankful to have each other and health insurance and jobs and a home and food on the table and healthy family members and all the things that make this life struggle-free. But if I’m not posting or answering emails or emotional or disconnected, please remember that everyone is struggling in some way, behind closed doors. We are young-ish and blessed, but not immune. We lived a fairy tale on TV and have a great life for all intents and purposes, but answers would be nice. So, I’m going to keep praying for answers and am hopeful that if you are the praying type, that you’ll think of Ryan when the time comes to send up a message.”
Just a few years ago, Trista suffered a scary medical event herself. We’re wishing the Sutter family well! If you don’t know, Trista was the first Bachelorette and they met and got married after their season aired.
Trista Sutter is on the mend after a painful surgery!
The 47-year-old The Bachelorette star took to Instagram on Friday (February 7) to reveal that she had undergone surgery “to fix a broken tibia, torn ligament and syndesmosis tear” after an incident where she “rolled [her] left foot while all [her] weight crunched down on it” as she was playing tennis with friends.
“I had never broken a bone before, but leave it to me (and Murphy’s freaking law) to break my ankle 3 days into not having insurance. We’re all good thanks to Cobra, but ugh!” Trista wrote.
“I definitely have a newfound appreciation for those out there dealing with injuries or disease, lack of insurance or lack of funds and single parents who may not have the assistance of someone like my hardworking, thoughtful, stepping-up husband and kids, and my sweet friends,” Trista added.
Trista‘s husband Ryan Sutter took to Instagram few days later to inform followers that she is now resting comfortably at home.
“Tirelessly working? After surgery this morning to repair a broken tibia and torn ligaments in her ankle, @tristasutter is finally home, recovering and ‘listening’ in on the hockey board meeting,” Ryan wrote. “Thanks to everyone who has helped us out the past few days. Not the best timing or situation but definitely the best group of friends and experts we could ever hope for. Thank you Thank you Thank you!”

Twelve of the former Bachelorette stars are gathering for a special, set to air later this evening on ABC!
The show – titled The Bachelorette Reunion: The Biggest Bachelorette Reunion in Bachelor History Ever – will reunite the past stars and reflect on their seasons. The show will also look ahead to Hannah Brown’s upcoming season, which will kick off next Monday.
Two Bachelorette ladies – Meredith Phillips (season two) and Jen Schefft (season three) – were unable to make it to film the special.

Trista Sutter, the original star of The Bachelorette, is currently recovering after she suffered a seizure during her European vacation this week.
The 44-year-old former reality star says she fell on her daughter’s chest and started turning blue. Trista shared the story of what happened in a post on Instagram, along with a photo of her in the hospital.
“This was me yesterday. …two hours after I had a seizure. …two hours after I fell on my daughter’s chest & she watched, along with her brother & grandparents, in confusion & horror as her mommy stared blankly off into the distance & started turning blue. …two hours after we were supposed to have an adventure. An adventure to one of the most beautiful National Parks in Europe,” Trista captioned the photo.
“Instead, I ended up in a euphoric white dream that the voices of my husband and daughter pulled me from and I ended up in a Croatian hospital being poked and prodded and wondering ‘why me?’” she continued.

Trista Sutter and her husband Ryan Sutter have a blast with their kids while vacationing at the Generations Riviera Maya by Karisma resort earlier this month in Mexico.
The 43-year-old original The Bachelorette star and the 41-year-old firefighter were seen enjoying the beachfront pool and building sandcastles on the beach with their two kids, Max, 8, and Blakesley, 6.
