Tom Holland Almost Wasn't Cast As Spider-Man, The Russo Brothers Reveal

Tom Holland has been playing Peter Parker for a few years now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, there was a time when Sony wasn’t on board with casting the now 24-year-old actor in the role as Spider-Man.

“We talked with [president Kevin] Feige at Marvel about Holland and he got excited and then we went to Sony…” Joe Russo shared in a new interview with The Playlist. “And they were like, ‘Let’s think about it for a minute.’ We could tell we were meeting resistance from Sony. So we brought [Tom] back, brought him back, brought him back, and we were relentless in our pursuit of jamming him down the throat of the studio who owns this IP. It came down to a fight, yet Sony just kept dragging their feet.”

He went on, revealing that although they have a good relationship with Marvel boss Feige, Sony was still hesitant about Tom.

“…Coming into Civil War, Sony is looking at us going, ‘OK, so you guys have the Midas touch, here’s our [Spider-Man] IP.’ But, also, they were reticent, nervous, about handing off something that could ultimately cost them hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions of dollars down the line,” Joe recalled.

Anthony added that Tom‘s age at the time was an issue.

“It was the first time Spider-Man had ever been cast as an actual teenager, right? Which was very important to us; there was a distinct nervousness of casting a kid,” he said.

“There’s a universe where Tom Holland is the last great movie star coming in underneath the wire of disruption. It takes a perfect storm of events to create a star: talent, timing, marketplace,” Joe continued.

In a recent interview, Tom opened up about the moment he found out he was cast as Spider-Man. Here’s what happened…

Tom Holland Says Zendaya Gave Him Some Advice After Coming Across As 'A Bit of A D-ck' to Fans

Zendaya is offering Tom Holland some tips on meeting fans!

The 24-year-old Spider-Man actor revealed that his co-star gave him some valuable advice about handling fan interactions in a recent interview with British GQ.

“Talking to Zendaya‘s helped me a lot, actually,” Tom said. “I used to come across sometimes as a bit of a d-ck to fans, mainly as I was always so surprised that they’d want a picture with me or signature or whatever.”

He explained, “I’d have the typical Londoner reaction, one of instant suspicion: ‘Why are you talking to me?’ Zendaya spotted this and quickly told me that this sort of reaction was going to be more aggro than just smiling and taking the picture. She totally changed the way I am able to be more comfortable in public.”

Tom also shared whether or not the upcoming third Spider-Man film would be his last in the series.

“I hope not, but I don’t have another contract – yet,” the actor revealed. “As I was cast as Spider-Man six years ago, I have always had the contract there as a safety net. I would never need to worry as, next year, I always had another Spider-Man film – but not any more. I’m just looking at my phone waiting for it to ring with a new contract.”

He went on to add that he is “one hundred percent” to another movie and said, “We’d need to keep the same core team. The director, Jon Watts, is as much Spider-Man as I am. Zendaya, Jacob [Batalon].”

Daisy Ridley Recalls Her 'Awkward' First Meeting with 'Chaos Walking' Co-Star Tom Holland

Daisy Ridley is recalling meeting her Chaos Walking co-star Tom Holland for the first time!

In a new interview, the 28-year-old actress talked about meeting the 24-year-old actor for the first back, admitting it was really “awkward.”

“We met the night that Tom won his BAFTA, and it was so weird because we both knew we were doing it [the movie Chaos Walking], but we didn’t know when and we didn’t know how,” Daisy shared with AP Entertainment.

If you forgot, Tom won the BAFTA Rising Star Award back in 2017.

“And then we met again on the plane – it was actually hilarious, because we met again on the plane, not to Montreal, but we were in those seats that face each other and it’s super awkward when you don’t really know someone, so we would put the screen up really slowly and the screen takes ages to go up and you’re like, ‘Oh my god, so awkward.’ But no, it ended up being great,” Daisy said with a laugh.

Daisy and Tom‘s Chaos Walking will be released on March 5. You can check out the trailer here.

During another recent interview, Daisy Ridley says she “would love” to play this superhero!

Here’s what he had to say…

On his first crush:Emma Watson in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. She wears this pink dress. That was mind-blowing for me.”

On his first auditions: “When I was 8 or 9, I auditioned for every role in Romeo and Juliet, including Juliet, and I didn’t get a single part. When I was 11, I booked Billy Elliot; that was the first job I ever booked. I couldn’t dance, but trainers would come to my school and teach me to dance at lunch. I was at a rugby school, so doing ballet in tights in the school gym wasn’t the coolest of things to do, but it paid off.”

On his first kiss: “It was backstage at Victoria Palace, the theater for Billy Elliot. There were five of us playing truth or dare. It was a good time. I definitely fancied her.”
