The Weeknd's 2021 Super Bowl Halftime Show Salary Revealed & It's Surprising!

You may be surprised to learn that The Weeknd is not being paid at all for his performance at the 2021 Super Bowl!

And on top of that, the 30-year-old entertainer, who is performing at the halftime show this year, actually invested $7 million into the performance.

“We’ve been really focusing on dialing in on the fans at home and making performances a cinematic experience, and we want to do that with the Super Bowl,” The Weeknd told Billboard.

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, who performed at last year’s halftime show, reportedly agreed to the same deal.

“They are willing to perform for free and even subsidize the production costs through their record label or concert promoters because of this incredible exposure,” Marc Ganis, president of consulting firm Sportscorp, told Forbes about JLo and Shakira‘s decision. “Even the biggest names need to continually promote themselves. The Super Bowl halftime show is the single biggest promotional vehicle for a music star on the planet.”

Bruno Mars and Beyonce also apparently agreed to the same deal with no payment given when they performed at the halftime show.

The exposure generally causes huge surges in the artist’s Spotify streams. Justin Timberlake‘s halftime show performance, for example, saw him have a 214% spike in Spotify listens. Apparently, Stubhub traffic also jumps after the Super Bowl shows with a 50% increase seen for all halftime acts.

Fans of The Weeknd will have a big chance to support him just after his halftime performance!

But what time will the halftime show begin? The 2021 Super Bowl halftime show will start at around 8:00 to 8:30 p.m. ET, roughly 90 minutes after kickoff.

According to The Weeknd, there will be no surprise guests, and there’s a reason for that. Here’s how long the halftime show will be.

The Weeknd also spent millions of his own money to stage this live experience. Find out more about how much the halftime show costs this year!

Although there were originally reports that The Weeknd‘s halftime performance would be the longest yet, Billboard confirmed that it will actually be the standard run time of past halftimes.

“Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that The Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime performance would be 24 minutes long. As in previous years, it will be roughly 12-13 minutes long,” the outlet clarified just ahead of the big game.

How Much Does the Super Bowl 2021 Halftime Show Cost?

The Weeknd is about to do the Super Bowl – and it’s going to be expensive.

And the superstar himself is putting tons of his own money into the performance, apparently: The Weeknd spent $7 million of his own money on production costs for his Super Bowl halftime show, his manager Wassim “Sal” Slaiby told Billboard last week.

He’s doing so to “make this halftime show be what he envisioned,” his manager added in the story, going on to explain that the NFL will cover production costs as usual.

“But in general for Super Bowl performances, according to top managers and major-label sources, labels and sponsors offset some of the costs, and the amounts vary from year to year,” the outlet went on to report.

The halftime show can cost more than $10 million to put on even though the musical artist isn’t paid, Reuters reported.

“We cover expenses and production costs,” an NFL spokesperson previously told Forbes.

That amount of coverage, however, seems to change.

“The NFL allows you a production budget — it’s almost never enough to satisfy what the actual production costs are. However, usually the label will step in and provide the shortfall. That seems like an extravagant number for [The Weeknd] to be out of pocket, unless the label’s going to participate.” business manager Lou Taylor told Billboard, who works with previous halftime-show performers like Jennifer Lopez.

According to Bruce Springsteen‘s manager Jon Landau, when he performed in 2009, the NFL gave him a $1 million production budget.

“They gave me 10 minutes worth of bullet points about how big the Super Bowl is, it’s the No. 1 show on Jupiter and Mars, it’s No. 1 with women, it’s No. 1 with people who don’t brush their teeth. There’s $1 billion transacted — I remember them saying that,” he explained.

“I have one question: What do you get paid to be part of the biggest show in the history of the universe? What does the artist get…earnings for the show for Bruce and the band: zero. But it was beautifully produced, Bruce and the band were sensational and we loved it. Until you’re there, you can’t comprehend how many people work on that show.”

The Weeknd Confirms No Surprise Guests for Super Bowl Halftime Show

The Weeknd is sharing some key details about his upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The 30-year-old After Hours singer just revealed that there will be no surprise guests during his performance, which is expected to be the longest halftime show of all time.

“I’ve been reading a lot of rumors,” The Weeknd said while chatting with NFL Network. “There wasn’t any room to fit it in the narrative and the story I was telling in the performance. So there’s no special guests, no.”

People have been guessing that stars like Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, or Kenny G might be popping up during the halftime show, but it seems none of them will appear.

During a press conference on Thursday (February 4), The Weeknd revealed lots of details about what fans can expect from his halftime show.
