Regina King sat down to speak with Reese Witherspoon for a Variety Studio: Actors on Actors event and one subject that was touched upon was the reality of being told to stay at home amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
Regina spoke about the reality of how some people can simply not stay home every day due to having to make money to support themselves and their families.
“At the end of the day, the reality is the reality. There’s not going to be a vaccine anytime soon. We have to understand that while we’re telling people, ‘Stay home, stay home,’ there are people out there who are not in financial situations that — to say that to them is almost insulting, coming from certain messengers,” Regina said. “So I try to be very careful about saying that too much, because I do understand that some people don’t know where their next meal is going to be right now in this moment.”
During the talk, Reese also praised Regina for the changes she wants to make in Hollywood, saying, “The thing I love about you is the stacking of achievements isn’t just for your own gain and benefit. That you are determined to make a lot of change in our business by committing to hire more women, more people of color — to put them in the driver’s seat. I think there’s such an alignment between a lot of women of our generation, about how we do not want to leave this business the way we found it. And you feel it, right? I feel like if we all look like we’re busy and doing three and four and five jobs, it’s because we’re trying to make up for lost time.”
