Jon Stewart Covers Charleston Shooting, Tells No Jokes (Video)

Jon Stewart gave an amazing speech to cover the Charleston church shooting during one of his final episodes of The Daily Show on Thursday night (June 18).

The 52-year-old comedian didn’t write any jokes for his opening monologue and said he was filled with “just sadness.”

“I didn’t do my job today, because of what happened in South Carolina,” Jon started off saying. “Maybe if I wasn’t nearing the end of the run or this wasn’t such a common occurrence, maybe I could have pulled out of the spiral, but I didn’t. I honestly have nothing other than just sadness.”

“If this had been what we thought was Islamic terrorism…it’s ‘we’ve got to do whatever we can — we’ll torture people! — we’ve got to do whatever we can to keep Americans safe.’ Nine people shot in a church, what about that? ‘Hey, what are you gonna do, crazy is as crazy does.’ That’s the part that I cannot for the life of me wrap my head around,” Jon said to compare the shooting to terrorism.

Jon Stewart has broken his silence on the controversy surrounding Trevor Noah and some questionable tweets he’s sent over the years.

“I can say this without hesitation: Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect … or not,” the 52-year-old talk show host said on his show on Monday (April 6). “Just as I earned your respect … or did not.”

“I do hope you give him the opportunity to earn that trust and respect. My experience with him is that he is an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and funny and smart individual. I think, you give him that time, and it’s going to be well worth it. I’m excited for where he’s going to take the thing,” Jon added.

Trevor Noah to Replace Jon Stewart on 'The Daily Show'

Trevor Noah is officially set to replace Jon Stewart as the host of Comedy Central’s nightly program, The Daily Show.

The 31-year-old comedian first made his debut on the show back in December and has only made three appearances so far.

“You don’t believe it for the first few hours,” Trevor told the New York Times of landing the huge job. “You need a stiff drink, and then unfortunately you’re in a place where you can’t really get alcohol.”

“I’m thrilled for the show and for Trevor,” Jon said in a statement. “He’s a tremendous comic and talent that we’ve loved working with.”

Michele Ganeless, the president of Comedy Central, also commented on the casting: “We talked to women. We talked to men. We found in Trevor the best person for the job. You don’t hope to find the next Jon Stewart ” there is no next Jon Stewart. So, our goal was to find someone who brings something really exciting and new and different.”
