Mariah Carey Throws Shade at NFL After They Aired This Commercial

Mariah Carey is throwing some shade at the NFL.

The superstar singer tweeted shortly after the NFL aired their Super Bowl commercial for their social justice initiative, “Inspire Change.” As part of the initiative, the NFL has pledged to donate $250 million over a 10-year period to fight systemic racism and social injustice.

Shortly after the ad aired live on TV, Mariah took to Twitter and wrote, “Happy Colin Kaepernick Appreciation Day!” Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the National Anthem as a peaceful protest of police brutality and systemic racism. He has not been in the league since he parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016.

Many began calling out the NFL over their Inspire Change initiative, bringing up Colin‘s name and asking why he was seemingly shut out from returning to the league.

Here’s where Colin was last spotted after the NFL kicked off a new season…

Colin Kaepernick Spotted in New York After NFL Kicks Off New Season

Colin Kaepernick walks around the SoHo neighborhood on Monday afternoon (September 14) in New York City.

The 32-year-old football player was spotted just days after the NFL’s new season began and he still is not playing for a team.

Colin hasn’t played a football game in nearly four years after he launched a peaceful protest against police brutality and racial inequality by simply kneeling during the national anthem. He filed a grievance against the NFL in 2017 for colluding to keep him out of the league and he received a confidential settlement in early 2019. His protests against racism and police brutality have continued and he still hasn’t been signed by a pro football team.

This past weekend, Colin accused the NFL of running “propaganda about how they care about Black Life” while his former teammate Eric Reid is being blackballed as well.

“While the NFL runs propaganda about how they care about Black Life, they are still actively blackballing Eric Reid (@E_Reid35) for fighting for the Black community. Eric set 2 franchise records last year, and is one of the best defensive players in the league,” Colin tweeted.

Ava DuVernay Is Turning Colin Kaepernick’s Life Into a Netflix Series!

Colin Kaepernick’s life is being turned into a scripted series for Netflix and Ava DuVernay is executive producing the project!

Colin in Black & White will be a six-episode series focusing on the football player’s “early life as a Black child growing up with a white adopted family and his journey to become a great quarterback while defining his identity,” according to Variety.

In a statement, Colin said, “Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens. We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”

The series has already been written and Colin is set to provide narration for the project.

Ava said, “With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture and for him, personally. Colin’s story has much to say about identity, sports and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn’t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix.”

This is Ava’s fourth project at Netflix, following When They See Us, 13th, and her upcoming documentary about the late Nipsey Hussle.
