CMA Awards Respond to Backlash After Charley Pride's Death From Coronavirus, One Month After Attending Indoor Ceremony

The death of country music legend Charley Pride shocked his fans only one month after he was in attendance at the 2020 Country Music Association Awards, which were held indoors in November.

The 86-year-old music star died on Saturday (December 12) in Dallas, Texas of complications from COVID-19, his publicist confirmed.

Shortly after his death, Maren Morris took to Twitter to say that if the indoor award show contributed to his catching Coronavirus, everyone should be outraged.

The CMAs have now responded with a statement.

“Everyone affiliated with the CMA Awards followed strict testing protocols outlined by the city health department and unions. Charley was tested prior to traveling to Nashville. He was tested upon landing in Nashville, and again on show day, with all tests coming back negative,” the statement read. “After returning to Texas following the CMA Awards, Charley again tested negative multiple times. All of us in the country music community are heartbroken by Charley’s passing. Out of respect for his family during their grieving period, we will not be commenting on this further.”

Maren Morris Says 'We Should Be Outraged' if Indoor CMAs Contributed to Charley Pride's Death

Maren Morris is speaking out following the death of country music legend Charley Pride, who died from coronavirus complications just one month after attending the 2020 CMA Awards in Nashville.

The awards show was held indoors at the Music City Center and an audience was present, unlike most awards shows happening in the pandemic.

“I don’t want to jump to conclusions because no family statement has been made, but if this was a result of the CMAs being indoors, we should all be outraged. Rest in power, Charley,” Maren tweeted.

She added, “F–k this f–king year.”

Someone replied to Maren and said, “Coming from an artist that also attended the indoor event… 🤦🏻‍♀️.”

Maren replied to that tweet and said, “hence ‘WE’ should be outraged.”

Charley Pride, a legend in the country music world, has passed away at the age of 86.

The music star died on Saturday (December 12) in Dallas, Texas of complications from COVID-19, his publicist confirmed.

Charley gave his final performance just one month ago when he appeared at the 2020 CMA Awards in Nashville to sing “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’” with current country star Jimmie Allen. You can see photos from that event in the gallery.

Credited as the first Black superstar in the country music, Charley was also the first Black member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was known for his baritone voice and another one of his big hits was “Is Anybody Goin to San Antone.”

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to The Pride Scholarship at Jesuit College Preparatory School, St. Philips School and Community Center, The Food Bank, or the charity of your choice.
