Broadway Shows in New York City Have an Official Re-Opening Date!

Vaccines are rolling out across the nation and world and now, Broadway has set its sights on a Fall 2021 reopening date.

“Broadway shows will be ready to open September 14 at 100% capacity. Tickets go on sale starting tomorrow,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Twitter. “Broadway is major part of our state’s identity and economy, and we are thrilled that the curtains will rise again.”

Broadway shows have been dark since March 12, 2020, when the Governor shut down all major gatherings in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. The pandemic raged on throughout 2020 as the world awaited vaccines. At the time of the Broadway shut down, there were 31 productions running with 8 new shows in previews and 8 in rehearsals.

Sutton Foster Vowed to Quit Broadway's 'Music Man' if Producer Scott Rudin Didn't Step Down

Sutton Foster deserves a standing ovation for the stand she took against producer Scott Rudin!

The two-time Tony-winning actress is set to star alongside Hugh Jackman in the upcoming Broadway revival of The Music Man, which was to be produced by Rudin.

After the recent allegations of abusive workplace behavior were revealed, Sutton reportedly told the rest of the producing team that she would leave the production if he remained on the team, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The outlet says that Hugh was “very concerned” about the claims, though he reportedly did not make any ultimatums in the way Sutton did. He did “express his position that something needed to be done.”

Rudin announced on Saturday morning (April 17) that he will “step away” from the Broadway productions that he was working on, effective immediately. His statement only said that he was stepping away from “active participation,” so it’s likely that he still has a financial stake in the show.

Another Tony-winning actress has also taken a stand against Rudin and the industry’s non-response to the allegations.

Karen Olivo Will Not Return to Broadway in 'Moulin Rouge' in Protest of Scott Rudin

Tony winner Karen Olivo has announced that she will not be returning to the Broadway musical Moulin Rouge when performances resume and it all has to do with Scott Rudin.

The Tony winner is the first Broadway star to take a real stand after allegations were made against the producer.

A bombshell report was released last week and it detailed numerous allegations against Rudin, who is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony-winning producer. His ex-staffers spoke out with allegations of physical and mental abuse while working with the exec.

While Rudin is not involved in Moulin Rouge, Karen says that she is leaving Broadway until the industry properly responds to the allegations and figures out a way to move forward appropriately.

“I could easily go back to the show and make a lot of money, but I still wouldn’t be able to control what I was putting out into the world,” she said in an Instagram video. “And what I’m seeing in this space right now, with our industry, is that everybody is scared, and nobody is really doing a lot of the stuff that needs to be done. People aren’t speaking out.”

Fran Drescher has previously announced that a Broadway musical based on the TV show is in the works and now she has revealed that she already has an actress in mind for the lead role.

In an interview with Marie Claire, Fran said that the musical will be “much bigger than the TV show” and she envisions Mr. Sheffield’s staff having a feather-duster dance number.
