Danai Gurira's 'Black Panther' Character Okoye to Get Origin Series on Disney+

Danai Gurira‘s future with the Marvel Cinematic Universe is looking bright!

The 43-year-old actress, who plays Dora Milaje general Okoye, will reportedly be getting her own origin spinoff series on Disney+, according to Deadline.

The outlet also reports that Danai will be returning for the upcoming sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which will be directed by Ryan Coogler.

Coogler is reportedly working on a separate Wakanda series for Disney+ and Deadline says it “would not come as a shock” if Danai stars in that show as well.

There are so many MCU shows in the works for Disney+. WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have both aired and next up is the premiere of Loki on June 9. Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye are both set for late 2021 releases.

Danai Gurira to Play Shirley Chisholm in Movie About Her Run for President in 1972

Danai Gurira has landed an exciting new project!

The 42-year-old Black Panther actress, who is also a Tony-nominated playwright, will be playing the iconic Shirley Chisholm in a movie that follows her historic run for president in 1972.

Deadline reports that The Fighting Shirley Chisholm will be “less a biopic than a snapshot of Chisholm’s groundbreaking campaign, as the first Black female in Congress became the first woman and the first person of color to seek a major American political party’s presidential nomination.”

Viola Davis was previously attached to star in the film with Maggie Betts as the director, but now Danai will lead the film with Cherien Dabis as the director.

Orange Is the New Black actress Uzo Aduba just played Chisholm in the FX on Hulu limited series Mrs. America and she won an Emmy for the role.

Chadwick Boseman's 'Black Panther' Co-Star Danai Gurira Writes Heartbreaking Tribute After His Death

Chadwick Boseman‘s Black Panther co-star Danai Gurira has paid tribute to him after his tragic death earlier in the weekend at the young age of 43. He quietly battled colon cancer before his death.

“How do you honor a king? Reeling from the loss of my colleague, my friend, my brother. Struggling for words. Nothing feels adequate. I always marveled at how special Chadwick was. Such a pure hearted, profoundly generous, regal, fun guy. My entire job as Okoye was to respect and protect a king. Honor his leadership. Chadwick made that job profoundly easy. He was the epitome of kindness, elegance, diligence and grace. On many an occasion I would think how thankful I was that he was the leading man I was working closely with. A true class act. And so perfectly equipped to take on the responsibility of leading the franchise that changed everything for Black representation,” the 43-year-old actress posted on Instagram.

She continued, “He made everyone feel loved, heard and seen. He played great, iconic roles because he possessed inside of himself that connection to greatness to be able to so richly bring them to life. He had a heroic spirit, and marched to the beat of his own drum; hence his excellence as an artist and the incredible courage and determination as he faced life’s challenges; while still guiding us all.”

Danai also wrote, “He was zen and sweet and funny (with the very best laugh), attentive, and truly, truly, good. I can’t even wrap my mind around this loss. A loss resonating in my own heart as well as around the globe. The children he inspired, my heart aches for them, to lose their hero just as they finally found him. I am so thankful to have taken the Black Panther journey with him. To have known him, spent time in his light and leadership and to call him forever a friend.”

She ended the tribute with the Xhosa phrase, “Lala Ngoxolo Kumkani,” which roughly translates to “Sleep in peace, O King.”

Danai Gurira Says Goodbye to 'The Walking Dead' After Seven Seasons

SPOILER ALERT – Don’t read ahead if you haven’t watched the latest episode of The Walking Dead!

Danai Gurira‘s time on The Walking Dead has come to an end.

After seven seasons on the hit AMC series, the 42-year-old actress’ character Michonne is off on a new journey. Danai announced she was leaving the show back in July 2019.

“It’s bittersweet,” Danai shared with The New York Times. “But it’s time for me to go on other journeys.”

In her final episode, we find Michonne re-imagining a series of events in her life, suggesting what her life might have been like if she had joined Team Negan (led by Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

Michonne then leaves her children in the care of Daryl (Norman Reedus) after discovering evidence that her former lover Rick Grimes (Andrew Grimes) is still alive. She then leaves on her mission to go find him.

Michonne not being killed off the show could suggest that she will be returning for the planned Walking Dead film series.

“They walked me through this last episode long before I got the script,” Danai continued. “But I wasn’t sure how it was going to work out until today, when I finally saw it. It was chilling to watch. And I don’t even know how they did some of that.”

While she wouldn’t confirm that she will be in any upcoming movies, Danai is grateful for her time on The Walking Dead and learned a lot from playing Michonne.

“Michonne was very much someone I had to step up to, especially when she started to grow into herself and step away from her demons,” Danai shared. “When she became an item with Rick, Michonne was kind of more cool, and Rick was hot. The way she handles and assesses and comes to clarity about things — I’ve always said, she’s smarter than me, she’s faster than me, and she’s stronger than me. So I had to step into her agility and power. I always felt like I could learn from her as a woman, you know?”

New episodes of The Walking Dead air on Sundays at 9pm ET on AMC.
