Sterling K. Brown Reveals His First Impression of Laura Dern - Watch!

Laura Dern and Sterling K. Brown are on the cover of Variety‘s Actors on Actors issue, out on newsstands now.

Here’s what the 52-year-old Big Little Lies actress and the 43-year-old This Is Us star had to say…

Sterling, on his first impression of Laura, her Big Little Lies character, and his desire to be more like her: “Let me segue to a first impression that I have of you. I’ve met you on a couple of occasions, in passing. And you strike me as the kind of person who is incredibly comfortable in their own skin. I’m wondering how long have you lived that life, or am I putting something on you? You seem fearless. The choices that you make as an actor — you’re not afraid to be very big. As Renata: ‘I’m not not going to be rich!’ It’s a whole mood. But some people are afraid to let it out there. How long did it take to become Laura Dern? Because I want to be like that.”

Laura, on being a woman and growing up in showbusiness: “Being a woman is amazing. I started making movies as an 11-year-old, and so becoming an adult actor is an amazing feeling because I’ve been raised by all these filmmakers who forced me to dive into the deep end. Complicated, amazing, fearless filmmakers who would create insane circumstances or worlds — but ask me to be incredibly honest in it, or have something simple and honest, and asked me to be radically insane in those worlds. And so I think that’s where you get your bravery. And my parents [Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd] are incredibly fearless, beautiful actors, and I watched them be fear- less in areas and fearful in areas.”

Laura, on how her parents hoped she would choose a career other than acting: “My mom discouraged me [from becoming an actor], because as a woman in the film industry, she was worried for me, especially as a child. And my dad assumed I’d find something else interesting. But I went into the family business.”

Sterling, on his hope as a parent: “I hope, in real life, as a parent, I create the space for my sons to come to me and say, ‘Dad, I’m having trouble. I need help.’”

“New character added into number two but he’s supposed to have been a part of this world for a long time,” Sterling added. “He was a lieutenant in the army of their grandfather so he’s somebody from their past that helps them connect to things.”

Sterling K. Brown also talked about what his kids dressed up as for Halloween, what it was like watching Avengers: Infinity War with his son, running into fans at the grocery store, and an acting tip he learned from Al Pacino. He also goes into talking about his new movie Waves, which hits theaters on November 22.

'Waves' Stars Sterling K. Brown & Renee Elise Goldsberry Only Have Praise for Kanye West

Sterling K. Brown and Waves co-star Renee Elise Goldsberry pose for a photo at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Coversations event for their movie on Friday (November 1) in Los Angeles.

The actors also did a Deadline Contenders panel the next day, where they praised Kanye West for providing music to the film.

“Bless his heart,” they both said. Sterling explained that Waves writer and director Trey Edward Shults provided music embedded in the script for the actors to hear while reading it.

“As you read the script you could hit a button, listen to a song. So the script had a song track to it,” Sterling said. “First time I’ve ever encountered that. It was awesome. And almost all of the music that was in the original script made it into the film.”

“Which was a testament to the film that Kanye, for example, gave so much music,” Renee added. “It’s beautiful because we get attached to the marriage of the music and the story and without the gift of their offering of that music we would have missed it.”

Waves, in theaters November 15, follows the epic emotional journey of a suburban African-American family—led by a well-intentioned but domineering father—as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss.

Sterling K. Brown Puts Ripped Shirtless Body on Display!

Sterling K. Brown is on the cover of Men’s Health magazine’s November 2019 issue, showing off his sculpted shirtless body in the images.

Here’s what the 43-year-old This Is Us actor had to share with the mag…

On his goal to live to 100, given the fact that black men are in worse health than almost any other demographic in the U.S.: “I think when [my father] passed [from a diabetes-induced heart attack at 45], I had sort of a recognition of the fact that 45 was young…I just don’t want to give in to the statistical analysis that says that is my fate. So I try to do things as proactively as possible to ensure that I’m around to see my children’s children and be of value to them when they come into the world. There’s so much to live for, and I don’t want to sell myself short by thinking I don’t have a right to longevity and vitality any more or less than anyone else.”

On support from his wife, actress Ryan Michelle Bathe: “Ryan celebrates my success. But sometimes it’s like, Damn, bro, when’s it my turn?”

On considering himself lucky to work regularly enough to pay the bills in his 20s: “At any point 90 percent of all the acting-union members are unemployed, and you’re just fighting to be part of the rotating 2 percent. There’s so much rejection that you have to be willing to deal with and let it sort of roll off your back. There are people I know who are absolutely brilliant who had to segue into something else in life.”
