Matthew Perry Steps Out in L.A., Voices Support for Black Lives Matter

Matthew Perry steps out to pick up some items at a local pharmacy in these new photos from Friday (June 5) in Malibu, Calif.

The 50-year-old Friends actor spoke up this past weekend to voice his support for the Black Lives Matter movement and he also recognized his privilege as a white man.

“Though I am from Canada, I am a white man living in America, which means I am privileged. I don’t know how to fix everything that is wrong, but I want to learn how to be a better ally for every Black person affected by systemic racism. I intend to put my money where my mouth is, but for now, allow me to say: #BlackLivesMatter,” he wrote on Instagram.

The cast of Friends was supposed to film a reunion special for the new streaming service HBO Max, which launches on May 27, but it has been delayed due to the pandemic. Get new details on when you can expect to get the special.

Here's When 'Friends' Reunion Might Air on HBO Max

The Friends reunion was postponed indefinitely when the Coronavirus pandemic hit America, and the stars of the show – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer – were unable to come together to tape the special as planned.

HBO Max is launching on May 27 and the Friends reunion was supposed to air at that time.

Now, Friends producer and director Kevin Bright went on Maria Menounos’ daytime show Better Together and revealed when the special may air.

“We’re just waiting. We’re waiting for a window. We feel the reunion needs to be done in front of an audience. We can’t not share it after all this time. So, uh, tentatively speaking, we’re hoping that the special will be completed by Thanksgiving. And, uh, that the show will be seen on HBOMax at that time,” Kevin said.

'Friends' Reunion Special Could Tape at End of Summer

The Friends reunion special, which was delayed indefinitely due to the Coronavirus pandemic, could film at the end of the summer, WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt said.

The reunion was supposed to be available on HBO Max on May 27, when the streaming service plans to launch.

“At first we thought, shows will be delayed for a month or two at the most, and now it seems like it’s going to be far longer than that,” Greenblatt said (via Variety). “We’re holding out for being able to get this special done hopefully by the end of the summer, if the stars align and hopefully we can get back into production. We do think there’s a value to having a big, raucous live audience to experience these six great friends coming back together and we didn’t want to just suddenly do it on a web call with, you know, six squares and people shooting from their kitchens and bedrooms.”

He added that if stay-at-home orders continue much longer, they could explore a virtual route.

“But at the moment, we’re trying to look to the future and get this thing done in a more conventional way, and I think it’s worth waiting for,” he added. “We would have loved to have had it on [HBO Max on] Day One, but at the same time, if we can get it launched in the fall, I think it’ll be something that we can have the audience really looking forward to as well.”

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer are all set to return for the event!

The Friends reunion special is officially happening!

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer will reunite for the unscripted special, which will premiere on the upcoming streaming service HBO Max.

The reunion special will premiere on the date that HBO Max debuts, which hasn’t yet been determined, though we know it will be in May 2020. The full series of Friends will also be available to stream on the launch date.

The special will be filmed on Stage 24 on the Warner Bros. Studio Lot in Burbank, Calif, where the show was filmed. Series creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman will also be involved.

“Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together — we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa, and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friends library,” said Kevin Reilly, chief content officer at HBO Max (via THR). “I became aware of Friends when it was in the very early stages of development and then had the opportunity to work on the series many years later and have delighted in seeing it catch on with viewers generation after generation. It taps into an era when friends — and audiences — gathered together in real time and we think this reunion special will capture that spirit, uniting original and new fans.”
