'Avengers' Directors Joe & Anthony Russo Respond to Marin Scorsese's Criticism of Marvel Movies

Joe and Anthony Russo are weighing in on an ongoing debate about Marvel movies.

The Avengers: Endgame directors spoke out after Martin Scorsese openly criticized Marvel films as “not cinema,” and later expanded on the thought in an op-ed.

“Ultimately, we define cinema as a film that can bring people together to have a shared, emotional experience,” Joe told The Hollywood Reporter.

“When we look at the box office [of] Avengers: Endgame, we don’t see that as a signifier of financial success, we see it as a signifier of emotional success. It’s a movie that had an unprecedented impact on audiences around the world in the way that they shared that narrative and the way that they experienced it. And the emotions they felt watching it,” he went on to say.

“But, at the end of the day, what do we know? We’re just two guys from Cleveland, Ohio, and ‘cinema’ is a New York word. In Cleveland, we call them movies.”

“The other way to think about it, too, is nobody owns cinema. We don’t own cinema. You don’t own cinema. Scorsese doesn’t own cinema,” added Anthony.

Leonardo DiCaprio Honors Martin Scorsese at Santa Barbara Film Festival!

Leonardo DiCaprio is dapper in a suit while attending the Santa Barbara International Film Festival: Kirk Douglas Award Honoring Martin Scorsese held at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara on Thursday (November 14) in Goleta, Calif.

The 44-year-old Oscar winner was joined by Al Pacino and Roger Durling as they all stepped out to help honor the man of the night, Martin Scorsese.

“One of the most remarkable things about Martin Scorsese — besides being one of our greatest filmmakers — is the generosity that he exudes to everybody on set, from his creative team to his crew and especially the actors that he works with,” Leonardo expressed during his speech (via THR). “He treats each and every one of us as a real collaborator and that is not easily said. You can say you’re a collaborator but Marty truly wants to know what you have to say as an artist.”

“These collaborations have been forged through the years. They’re strong, symbiotic relationships with Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Joe Pesci, and dare I say myself. Through the years, these collaborations have become more like his alter egos, his muse, or more like his family,” Leonardo continued. “His body of work will be revered for centuries and generations to come.”

Marvel's Kevin Feige Reacts to Martin Scorsese's Comments About Marvel Movies

Kevin Feige is speaking out about Martin Scorsese‘s criticism of Marvel movies, doubling down on his belief that the movies are “not cinema.”

The Marvel chief creative officer opened up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter‘s Scott Feinberg on the Awards Chatter podcast on Sunday (November 10).

“I think that’s not true. I think it’s unfortunate. I think myself and everyone who works on these movies loves cinema, loves movies, loves going to the movies, loves to watch a communal experience in a movie theater full of people,” he said.

“We did Civil War. We had our two most popular characters get into a very serious theological and physical altercation. We killed half of our characters at the end of a movie [Avengers: Infinity War]. I think it’s fun for us to take our success and use it to take risks and go in different places,” he went on to say regarding cinematic risks.

“Everybody has a different definition of cinema. Everybody has a different definition of art. Everybody has a different definition of risk. Some people don’t think it’s cinema. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Everyone is entitled to repeat that opinion. Everyone is entitled to write op-eds about that opinion, and I look forward to what will happen next. But in the meantime, we’re going to keep making movies.”

Martin Scorsese Explains Why He Believes Marvel Movies Are 'Not Cinema'

“Many of the elements that define cinema as I know it are there in Marvel pictures. What’s not there is revelation, mystery or genuine emotional danger. Nothing is at risk. The pictures are made to satisfy a specific set of demands, and they are designed as variations on a finite number of themes,” he said.

“They are sequels in name but they are remakes in spirit, and everything in them is officially sanctioned because it can’t really be any other way. That’s the nature of modern film franchises: market-researched, audience-tested, vetted, modified, revetted and remodified until they’re ready for consumption.”

He went on to explain why he sees a problem with franchise films.

“So, you might ask, what’s my problem? Why not just let superhero films and other franchise films be? The reason is simple. In many places around this country and around the world, franchise films are now your primary choice if you want to see something on the big screen. It’s a perilous time in film exhibition, and there are fewer independent theaters than ever. The equation has flipped and streaming has become the primary delivery system. Still, I don’t know a single filmmaker who doesn’t want to design films for the big screen, to be projected before audiences in theaters.”

Martin Scorsese Reveals Why He Turned Down Directing 'Joker'

Famed director Martin Scorsese made headlines a few weeks ago for his comments about Marvel movies being “not cinema.”

Now, he’s revealing why he turned down directing Joaquin Phoenix‘s Joker movie.

“I know the film very well,” Martin told the BBC. “I know [director Todd Phillips] very well. My producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff produced it. I thought about it a lot over the last four years and decided I did not have the time for it. It was personal reasons why I didn’t get involved. But I know the script very well. It has a real energy and Joaquin. You have remarkable work.”

“For me, ultimately, I don’t know if I make the next step into this character developing into a comic book character,” he continued. “You follow? He develops into an abstraction. It doesn’t mean it’s bad art, it’s just not for me…The superhero films, as I’ve said, are another art form. They are not easy to make. There’s a lot of very talented people doing good work and a lot of young people really, really enjoy them.”
