Adam Driver & Daisy Ridley Talk 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' - First Look From the Set!

Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley are on the cover of Vanity Fair‘s Summer 2019 issue, out on May 30.

Director J.J. Abrams, along with cast members Oscar Isaac and John Boyega, opened up about the highly anticipated finale of the nine-film Star Wars franchise.

Here’s what the Star Wars cast had to say…

Adam, on Kylo Ren’s background, growing up the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia: “…He had been forging this maybe-bond with Rey, and it kind of ends with the question in the air: is he going to pursue that relationship, or when the door of her ship goes up, does that also close that camaraderie that they were maybe forming?”

Daisy on her character, Rey, in The Rise of Skywalker: “I think there’s a part of Rey that’s like, dude, you f–king had it all, you had it all, that was always a big question during filming: you had it all and you let it go.”

J.J., on filming The Rise of Skywalker: “Working on nine, I found myself approaching it slightly differently, which is to say that, on seven, I felt beholden to Star Wars in a way that was interesting—I was doing what to the best of my ability I felt Star Wars should be. It felt slightly more renegade; it felt slightly more like, you know, F–k it, I’m going to do the thing that feels right because it does, not because it adheres to something.”

J.J., the trilogy he directed: “This trilogy is about this young generation, this new generation, having to deal with all the debt that has come before. And it’s the sins of the father, and it’s the wisdom and the accomplishments of those who did great things, but it’s also those who committed atrocities, and the idea that this group is up against this unspeakable evil and are they prepared? Are they ready? What have they learned from before? It’s less about grandeur. It’s less about restoring an old age. It’s more about preserving a sense of freedom and not being one of the oppressed.”

J.J. Abrams & Jordan Peele Fight Georgia Abortion Law Before Filming 'Lovecraft Country'

J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele are taking a stand against Georgia’s abortion law.

The duo, who are set to film their new HBO drama Lovecraft County in the state, plan to donate funds to fight the newly passed abortion bill.

“In a few weeks we start shooting our new show, Lovecraft Country and will do so standing shoulder to shoulder with the women of Georgia. Governor Kemp‘s ‘Fetal Heartbeat’ Abortion Law is an unconstitutional effort to further restrict women and their health providers from making private medical decisions on their terms. Make no mistake, this is an attack aimed squarely and purposely at women,” they said in a joint statement.

J.J. added, “We stand with Stacey Abrams and the hardworking people of Georgia, and will donate 100 percent of our respective episodic fees for this season to two organizations leading the charge against this draconian law: the ACLU of Georgia and Fair Fight Georgia. We encourage those who are able to funnel any and all resources to these organizations.”

Other industry executives are also taking a stand, with at least five production companies pledging to not shoot any projects in the state until the law is overturned.

J.J. Abrams Opens Up About What to Expect in 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

J.J. Abrams is talking Star Wars: Episode IX!

The director spoke to Stephen Colbert at Star Wars Celebration on Friday (April 12) in Chicago, Ill.

“This movie, in addition to being the end of three trilogies, it also has to work as its own movie. It’s about this new generation and what they’ve inherited the light and the dark, and asking the question as they face the greatest evil, are they prepared? Are they ready?” he told the crowd.

He also once again confirmed the late Carrie Fisher will appear in the film.

“You don’t recast that part and you don’t suddenly have her disappear. The weird miracle of having a number of scenes from Force Awakens that had got unused, looking at those scenes and starting to understand that there was an actually a way to use those scenes and continue her story, so that it would be her. The idea of having a CG character was off the table…we said, ‘what if we could write scenes about her so it’s her performance?’” he explained.

“Every day it hits me that she’s not here. It’s so surreal because we are working with her still, if that makes sense. She’s in scenes. She’s alive in scenes.”

He also confirmed the movie does not take place immediately after 2017′s The Last Jedi.

“Some time has gone by. This is an adventure that the group goes on together. It’s a story that I think one of the great things about the movie, getting to work on it, was the dynamic between the characters. They are just the most wonderful together.”

Billy Dee Williams will return as Lando Calrissian for the first time since 1983′s Return of the Jedi.

Billy came on to the set…and it just went silent. Everyone was watching. It was so sweet to see the reaction from the people who were working on the movie. Honestly it was an emotional thing,” the director explained.

The upcoming Star Wars movie hits theaters on December 20.
