Elle Fanning Talks the Royal Family, Her Sister Dakota, & More

Elle Fanning gets colorful on the cover of Tatler‘s November issue, available via digital download and newsstands on October 3!

Here’s what the 21-year-old Teen Spirit actress had to share with the mag:

On the Royal Family:Kate [Middleton] and Meghan [Markle] are doing royal femininity very differently. I can’t imagine being in the public eye like that. Every single move you make is critiqued. … I like [Prince] Harry. Isn’t he the fun one?”

On her and her sister Dakota Fanning acting: “Well, I saw my sister doing it and I was a huge ham growing up. We would constantly put on these scenes around the house. It wasn’t for anyone, only for ourselves. We would do lines, characters, it was very funny. It just felt right at home for us… We weren’t supposed to do this at all. My mom played tennis, my dad played baseball, my mom’s dad was a quarterback in the NFL. We were supposed to play tennis or something.”

On her love of Marilyn Monroe - aged 9, she told director John August on the set of The Nines: “Everyone says Dakota’s Meryl, and I’m Marilyn.”

On an industry beset with the pressure to appear perfect and how she surrounds herself with a sisterhood: “There is a stigma placed on women in any workplace. But especially in Hollywood. You must be super competitive and super jealous. And it’s something that people want to project, but it’s actually not the case.”

Dakota Fanning Responds to Whitewashing Claims For 'Sweetness in the Belly'

Dakota Fanning is responding to allegations of whitewashing in her new movie, Sweetness in the Belly.

In the film, Dakota plays a young woman who was abandoned in Africa and then raised Muslim.

“Just to clarify. In the new film I’m part of, Sweetness in the Belly, I do not play an Ethiopian woman. I play a British woman abandoned by her parents at seven years old in Africa and raised Muslim. My character, Lilly, journeys to Ethiopia and is caught up in the breakout of civil war. She is subsequently sent ‘home’ to England, a place she is from but has never known,” Dakota posted on her Instagram Story to clarify that she plays a white woman in the movie. “Based on a book by Camilla Gibb, this film was partly made in Ethiopia, is directed by an Ethiopian man and features many Ethiopian women. It was a great privilege to be part of telling this story.”

“The film is about what home means to people who find themselves displaced and the families and communities that they choose and that choose them,” Dakota added in her statement.

Sweetness in the Belly is set to debut at the Toronto Film Festival this coming week.

Dakota Fanning Opens Up About Working With Quentin Tarantino on 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'

Dakota Fanning takes over the cover of the new issue of PorterEdit, opening up about her new movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Here’s what the 25-year-old actress shared:

On finally getting to work with Quentin Tarantino on Once Upon a Time In Hollywood: “I knew Quentin was making this film [Once Upon a Time In Hollywood] and, as a fan, I wrote him a random note. Then he asked me to audition and I ended up getting the role of Squeaky. [...] It was a dream come true, there’s no other way to describe it. I probably would’ve played any role but the fact that it was such a juicy and challenging one made it even more exciting.”

On what director Quentin Tarantino is like to work with on set: “The first time I met [Quentin], he was so warm and friendly. I think you can tell how much he loves movies from afar – from his films and reading his interviews. Up close he’s like that, but tenfold. Also, his sets are no-phone zones; everyone checks in their phone beforehand. I think, for him, it’s such a privilege to make movies that the thought of looking at someone playing Candy Crush [while on set] is upsetting.”

On wanting to direct a film with her sister, actor Elle Fanning: “I do want to direct a film one day. Working with my sister is a big thing, too. I would love for Elle to write something and me to direct it. We’ve always talked about that because she’s definitely more of the writer than me.”

Dakota Fanning Reveals How She Unwinds After A Stressful Day with 'Shape' Mag

Dakota Fanning takes over the July/August 2019 issue of Shape magazine.

Here’s what the 25-year-old Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actress shared:

On the importance of working out: “I come from a family of athletes [her mom played professional tennis, and her dad played minor league baseball], so being active was instilled in me from a young age. I like the high of feeling strong.”

On listening to your body: “I try to work out six days a week. I love to do Cardio Barre, a ballet-inspired cardio class. I’ve been taking it since I was in high school, and I’m obsessed. I also started doing AKT [a dance-based cardio and strength workout]. The first time I did it, I thought I was going to die! It was so tough in the best possible way.”

On loving yourself: “I have a really good ritual to help me unwind. I take a bath every night, no matter what. I put on a podcast, get in the tub, and close my eyes. This routine is such a constant in my life; I can’t live without it. If I’m in a hotel and there isn’t a tub, I have to move. It’s like, No, I won’t. I can’t. I’ve got to have a bath.”
