Anthony Mackie's Response to Sam & Bucky Romance Rumors Is Facing Backlash on Twitter
Anthony Mackie is currently a trending topic on Twitter because of all the backlash he’s receiving for comments that he made about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
In a new interview, the 42-year-old actor was asked about the friendship between his character Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan‘s character Bucky Barnes. He also commented on how some fans interpreted the show to have a budding romance between the superheros.

“So many things are twisted and convoluted. There’s so many things that people latch on to with their own devices to make themselves relevant and rational,” Anthony told Variety. “The idea of two guys being friends and loving each other in 2021 is a problem because of the exploitation of homosexuality. It used to be guys can be friends, we can hang out, and it was cool. You would always meet your friends at the bar, you know. You can’t do that anymore, because something as pure and beautiful as homosexuality has been exploited by people who are trying to rationalize themselves.”
He continued, “So something that’s always been very important to me is showing a sensitive masculine figure. There’s nothing more masculine than being a superhero and flying around and beating people up. But there’s nothing more sensitive than having emotional conversations and a kindred spirit friendship with someone that you care about and love.”
“Sam and Steve had a relationship where they admired, appreciated and loved each other,” he added. “Bucky and Sam have a relationship where they learn how to accept, appreciate and love each other. You’d call it a bromance, but it’s literally just two guys who have each other’s backs.”
Anthony‘s comments aren’t sitting well with a lot of people on Twitter. You can read comments below.

this is….such a weird statement…it basically sounds like he's complaining about people who want more representation for queer men, then realizing that's homophobic mid sentance and trying to backpedal https://t.co/YeViX15nMk

Mackie I love you but you're wrong, EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF CONTENT MEDIA is about dudes being dudes and gals being pals and we queer people have a stupidly few amount of content that really tells our stories, that's why WE queer people project ourselves on other's stories.#tfatws https://t.co/5SaZ9Yp4QP

I *think* the complaint here is that friendship is viewed by fans as shipping/romance, and that MIGHT be a valid point if we weren't so goddamn starved for queer romances in media that we're ready to ship whatever even sorta works just for SOME kind of rep. https://t.co/wQ3OCz3sMK

man talks about gay romance like it’s an action figure that loses its value if you take it out of the box to play with it https://t.co/cbUd6rypnX

i get what he's saying but let's be clear: if someone's exploiting the lgbt community, it's definitely companies using queerbaiting & 🌈 to claim they're not lgbtphobes & love diversity when in reality they don't care, not us asking for decent representation in the 21st century. https://t.co/o1YF481IJf

He’s kind of right and I get what he’s saying, but he worded it so poorly with rationalize part and he would’ve been better off saying nothing about the ship https://t.co/8FCAAlI6te

Anyways most MLM relationships in media are either broken apart via death or don’t happen period bc men who watch TV can only fathom WLWs so they can fetishize it. Str8 men love to cry about this when rlly it exists only in online spaces with 0 chances of happening

If you could text Anthony Mackie and let him know that queer people wanting to see media that recognizes they exist isn't exploitative and that queerness isn't grody when it's actually acted out/witnessed by other human beings, that'd be swell. Thanks. pic.twitter.com/yRdX1kvGiA

Fans like to make up their stories and theories. LGBTQ fans are used to looking for representation in subtext. Until stories that feature us aren't a noteworthy exceptional event, we'll continue to do that.
