Prince Harry Talks More About the Moment When Meghan Markle Told Him About Suicidal Thoughts

Prince Harry is opening again about the moment his wife Meghan Markle told him about her suicidal thoughts.

The 36-year-old Duke of Sussex continued the conversation in a bonus episode of his Apple TV+ docu-series The Me You Can’t See.

“The thing that stopped her from seeing it through was how unfair it would be on me after everything that had happened to my mum and to now be put in a position of losing another woman in my life, with a baby inside of her, our baby,” Harry said in the previous episodes. “The scariest thing for her was her clarity of thought. She hadn’t ‘lost it.’ She wasn’t crazy. She wasn’t self-medicating, be it through pills or through alcohol. She was absolutely sober. She was completely sane. Yet in the quiet of night, these thoughts woke her up.”

During the bonus episode, Harry chatted with co-host Oprah Winfrey about advice they’d give to people who are on the receiving end of a conversation with a suicidal person.

“So many people are afraid of being on the receiving end of that conversation [from a suicidal person] because they don’t feel like they have the right tools to give the right advice,” Harry said in the special. “But what you want to say is, ‘You’re there.’ Listen, because listening and being part of that conversation is without doubt the best first step that you can take.”

Harry previously said, “I’m somewhat ashamed of the way that I dealt with it. And of course, because of the system that we were in and the responsibilities and the duties that we had, we had a quick cuddle, and then we had to get changed and had to jump in a convoy with a police escort and drive to the Royal Albert Hall for a charity event and then step out into a wall of cameras and pretend as though everything’s OK. There wasn’t an option to say, ‘You know what? Tonight we’re not going to go. Because just imagine the stories that come from that.”

Meghan told Harry that she was contemplating killing herself on the night of January 16, 2019, right before they were set to leave for an event at Royal Albert Hall. She previously spoke to Oprah about the upsetting photo she saw of herself after the event happened.

At the time, Meghan was pregnant with the couple’s son Archie.
