'New Mutants' Co-Creator Bob McLeod Puts Movie on Blast: 'There's Just No Excuse'

Artist Bob McLeod, who co-created The New Mutants with writer Chris Claremont, is speaking out.

The 69-year-old artist spoke out on social media upon the release of the 2020 film based on his Marvel series.

“I was very excited when I heard they were making a New Mutants movie. I thought making it into a horror movie was perhaps an interesting idea, but not at all how the characters should be introduced to the public at large. But, hey, my characters in a movie! I never would have thought that would actually happen,” he wrote.

“But then, I was disappointed when they didn’t give Patti braids, although I like Blu Hunt. I was disappointed when Rahne wasn’t a redhead with spiky hair, although I adore Maisie Williams. I was disappointed that Sam isn’t tall and gawky, although I do like Charlie Heaton. But mainly I was very disappointed that Roberto isn’t short and dark-skinned. Yet another example of Hollywood white-washing. There’s just no excuse. So basically, #JoshBoone erased everything I contributed to the way the characters look. And now, the movie has come out at last, and apparently they’ve credited someone named Bob Macleod as co-creator. They couldn’t even be bothered to check the spelling of my name sometime in the last three years. And that can’t be fixed. That will be on the movie forever. I think I’m done with this movie.”

The movie’s director just deleted his Instagram after the film’s release…

“When I walked into that room, I was pretty sure that I wasn’t playing the role. It was a weird audition because Dougray Scott had the role and then he got caught up in Mission: Impossible 2,” he said.

“It was like this Hail Mary to begin with, which is probably the best way to do an audition. You’re going in like ‘Eh,’” he continued.

He also remembered being driven to the airport by Kevin Feige, who was an assistant on X-Men before becoming the creative head of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“No one understood it was the beginning of, like, Comic-Con was a 50,000-person thing. The internet was really just beginning. No one really understood. What they thought was like, a subculture. Comic books was actually mainstream but no one knew that,” he went on to say.

He also revealed he was almost fired from the role!

Michael Jackson Wanted to Play Professor Xavier in 'X-Men'

Michael Jackson had X-Men ambitions.

The late pop icon’s film aspirations were explored in a new THR cover story about Bryan Singer‘s 2000 movie, X-Men.

According to the report, Michael was interested in playing Professor Xavier in the film – and had no issue with wearing makeup to play the role of an older white character.

“In the spring of 1999, Bryan Singer and a group of X-Men producers and crew were working out of the old Fox offices near Olympic and Bundy when Michael Jackson walked in the door. Wearing sunglasses and refusing to shake hands, Jackson was visiting the industrial space to meet with Singer to discuss the prospect of playing Professor Xavier in the upcoming film. ‘I said to him, ‘Do you know Xavier is an older white guy?” X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner recalls. ‘And Michael said, ‘Oh yeah. You know, I can wear makeup.”

From there, Michael opened up an “elaborate presentation complete with the short film Ghosts, in which the pop star morphed into a 60-something white mayor railing against a well-meaning performer who entertains local children with magic tricks.”

Twentieth Century Fox “never seriously considered Jackson for the role, which eventually went to Patrick Stewart in a turn that enabled him to be known for a popular character other than Star Trek‘s Captain Picard.”

Michael was already in the thick of all his allegations by X-Men,” a former executive added.
