'The Bachelor' Finale Spoilers: Matt James Explains Why He Broke Up with Rachael Kirkconnell

The latest season of The Bachelor had a shocking conclusion and now Matt James is opening up to explain why it had to end the way it did.

Matt gave his final rose to Rachael Kirkconnell, but decided not to propose because he didn’t feel he was ready to take that step in their relationship.

After the season had wrapped, photos from Rachael‘s past surfaced and showed that she had attended an Antebellum party in 2018. At first, Matt was sticking by her side, but he couldn’t continue their relationship after Rachael expressed that she didn’t understand why people were offended by the images.

“It was as tough as you can imagine, and it’s heartbreaking,” Matt told After the Final Rose host Emmanuel Acho. “If you don’t understand why something like that is problematic in 2018, there’s a lot of me that you won’t understand. It’s as simple as that. … And I wasn’t okay, because it was in that moment and the conversation that I had that Rachael might not understand what it means to be Black in America.”

Matt said that he ended their relationship so Rachael can take time to grow as a person, but that he couldn’t be with her while she does that.

“As Rachael acknowledged in her apology, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done. I have to take a step back and allow her to put in that work,” he said. “And I’m looking forward to seeing her put in that work.”

Later on in the episode, Matt and Rachael came face-to-face for the first time since their breakup.

Rachel Lindsay Returns to Instagram Following Harassment from 'The Bachelor' Fans

Rachel Lindsay is back on Instagram.

A few weeks ago, the 35-year-old former The Bachelorette disabled her Instagram account amid the ongoing discussion regarding racism surrounding the show and Chris Harrison exiting the franchise after a series of controversial remarks.

Rachel‘s Higher Learning podcast co-host Van Lathan addressed her departure from social media, saying it was because of all the hate she was getting from Bachelor fans amid the controversy.

On Saturday (March 6), Rachel returned to Instagram to share an empowering message.

“‘I want to be like a sunflower so that even on the darkest days I will stand tall and find the sunlight’ 🌻🌻🌻” Rachel wrote along with a photo of sunflowers.

Last month, Rachel interviewed Chris and they had a 14-minute conversation about current The Bachelor contestant Rachael Kirkconnell and the backlash over her past racist behavior.

Chris defended Rachael‘s decision to attend an “antebellum plantation themed ball” in 2018 and undermined points Rachel was making throughout the discussion. He has since announced that he is taking a step back from The Bachelor.

In a new interview on Good Morning America, Chris apologized to Rachel for the situation, and she has since accepted his apology, saying it’s time to “move forward.”

Rachel also recently announced that she would be leaving Bachelor Nation as soon as her contract was over.

She also said she and Chris have not spoken directly since his interview on Good Morning America, but she watched it. She also said they spoke about three weeks ago, and he apologized directly then too.

If you didn’t know, during an interview with Rachel Lindsay, he said that the “woke police” was out to get contestant Rachael Kirkconnell against claims that she had been racist in her past behavior, and that there is a difference in how one behaves in 2018 vs. in 2021.

“I am saddened and shocked at how insensitive I was in that interview with Rachel Lindsay. I can’t believe I didn’t speak against antebellum parties, what they stand for. I didn’t say it then and I want to say it now: those parties are not OK, past, present, future. And I didn’t speak from my heart. And that is to say that I stand against all forms of racism, and I am deeply sorry to Rachel Lindsay and to the Black community,” he said. Find out what else he said in the apology.
