Ryan Reynolds & Taika Waititi Joke That They Both Don't Know What 'Green Lantern' Is

Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi are poking some fun at their previous movie together, Green Lantern.

The two entertainers starred in the 2011 movie as the title character aka Hal Jordan (Reynolds) and his best friend Thomas Kalmaku (Waititi).

In an interview with Total Film magazine in support of their new movie together, Free Guy, Ryan and Taika joked that they both didn’t know what Green Lantern was.

“What’s the project you’re talking about? I’ve never heard of it,” Taika joked. “…No, that type of thing is great, because Ryan and I have both got a similar sense of humor in regards to things like that. I find it really funny that I did that film. The thing is, it’s like when people shy away from things, and they don’t want to admit they’ve done something, or they don’t ever reference it, I find it worse.”

He continued, “If an actor is brave enough or comfortable enough in themselves to acknowledge it, and to be self-deprecating, and to own that they have been a part of something that’s been lambasted a bit, then I think that’s great…because when you can make fun of yourself, then everybody else understands: ‘Oh, we’re all in on the joke.’ Because if you pretend it never happened, then it makes it kind of weird and uncomfortable for everyone.”

“I still don’t have any idea what that project is. I’m not entirely sure which one you’re talking about,” Taika quipped.

Ryan added, “I’ve never met him. I still can’t quite figure out how we got him for [Free Guy]. He just sort of said ‘yes’ right away.”

Just recently, Ryan also poked fun at the movie in a commencement speech for his alma mater.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker is returning to direct the fourth movie in the Thor franchise and he jokingly teased that Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark would be returning for the film.

While going live on Instagram on Thursday (April 9), a page from the fake script could be seen on Taika‘s desk while he showed off other things on the desk.

“Thor squints, trying to make out the figure before him,” the script reads. Thor then says, “Do’th mineth eyeth deceiveth me?” before realizing that Tony is in front of him.

When Thor asks Tony how he’s still alive after his demise in Avengers: Endgame, Tony says, “Science. Also, Thanos is back.” He then says that the Avengers are assembling again and it’s “GO TIME.”

Tony says, “Everyone who died is coming back. And this time we’re avenging even more than ever. From now on we’ll be known as… The Avengererers.”
