Sarah Ferguson's 1996 Interview With Oprah Winfrey Goes Viral Ahead of Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Special

As the world awaits Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s interview with Oprah Winfrey, many people are remembering another royal interview with Oprah.

Back in 1996, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, sat down with Oprah to discuss marrying into the royal family, and everything that came with the territory.

Sarah opened up about what it was like to live in Buckingham Palace, why the late Princess Diana was the perfect princess, and how the British media is “cruel” and “invasive.”

“I must explain that the British press at the moment is completely and utterly cruel and abusive and so invasive. It is very cruel and very painful when you are going to try and find the feelings within to be on such a public stage,” she explained.

When asked by Oprah why she didn’t just continue to “play the game,” she said: “You could do that, and if that’s what suits you, then that’s what suits you.”

“But Diana and I are like rivers, we want to learn more, we want to go around the corner, we are hungry for more.”

She also discussed all the Buckingham Palace rules.

“The palace from when you look at it from the outside, the windows have to be open in only a certain amount so they are all in line, and I’d come in and throw open all the windows,” she said. “And no, that was wrong.”

Here’s how to watch Harry and Meghan‘s interview airing later tonight (March 7).

Meghan Markle recently explained why she decided to speak out now, and is also accusing the royal family of something big.
