Ryan Tedder Explains Why He's Donating Profits from New Music to Charity

Ryan Tedder is opening up about his thoughts regarding new music amid the global health crisis.

The 40-year-old OneRepublic frontman spoke out in an interview with USA Today.

When asked about the idea of releasing new music amid quarantine, he said: “Nobody can compete with the news cycle right now. And if you’re not doing that, you’re competing with Tiger King. We have this huge record that we wanted to drop in mid-May that we now won’t. It’s a summer song, it’s like the Beach Boys, it feels like it’s such a hit, but I’m not going to do it in the middle of a pandemic.”

“We dropped a charity song two weeks ago called “Better Days,” and it’s a non-cheesy anthem about what it feels like now to be in this time and space we’re in. But the only way I could release it in good conscience was by donating profits to the Red Cross, because I feel weird saying, ‘Come buy my stuff, check me out.’ Meanwhile, people are sick and dying. It’s very tone-deaf. And unless you’re an artist who had a lot of momentum going into this pandemic like The Weeknd or Dua Lipa, it’s really hard to get anyone to pay attention,” he went on to explain.

OneRepublic Drop New Single 'Better Days' for Good Cause - Listen Here!

OneRepublic are using their music for good!

The band, fronted by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ryan Tedder, have just dropped their new single “Better Days” from their upcoming new album, HUMAN.

OneRepublic and Interscope Records are set to donate a portion of the proceeds from the streaming of “Better Days,” which was recorded over the past week, through September 2020 to benefit MusiCares® who have established the COVID-19 Relief Fund to help those in the music community affected by the ongoing global health crisis.

“We were in the final week of our fifth album deadline when a global pandemic was declared by the WHO. A few of us unknowingly got exposed to somebody with Covid-19 in London and ended up in quarantine in LA at my studio for two weeks. With only two songs left to finish, one of them happened to be ‘Better Days‘. We write about real experiences and events that happen to us – this is what happens when you write a song during a crisis.”

As part of the release, OneRepublic is also inviting fans to collaborate on their music video for “Better Days.” Launched yesterday, OneRepublic wants fans to share their videos at home, sharing acts of kindness. They will collect videos from fans over the next few days using the Cinebody app.

You can also stream “Better Days” on Spotify and download it on iTunes now!
