'Mrs. Doubtfire' Director Reveals the Truth Behind Alleged NC-17 Version of the Movie

Mrs. Doubtfire director Chris Columbus is setting the record straight about a possible NC-17 cut of his movie.

On Thursday (March 18), a tweet that claimed there were PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17 cuts of the beloved Robin Williams film went viral. People had mixed thoughts about the idea of an explicit cut of the film.

Chris clarified in an interview with EW on Friday that while there isn’t an NC-17 cut of the film, there are three separate versions of it and one of them is R-rated.

“The reality is that there was a deal between Robin and myself, which was, he’ll do one or two, three scripted takes. And then he would say, ‘Then let me play.’ And we would basically go on anywhere between 15 to 22 takes, I think 22 being the most I remember,” the director explained.

Chris recalled that Robin would create new lines and versions for every take. “He would sometimes go into territory that wouldn’t be appropriate for a PG-13 movie, but certainly appropriate and hilariously funny for an R-rated film. I only [previously] used the phrase NC-17 as a joke. There could be no NC-17 version of the movie,” he said.

The director also added that while Robin‘s improv led to “three or four” versions of the film, he isn’t necessarily planning on releasing them.

“I would be open to maybe doing a documentary about the making of the film, and enabling people to see certain scenes re-edited in an R-rated version,” Chris said. “The problem is, I don’t recall most of it. I only know what’s in the movie at this point because it’s been a long time. But I do remember it was outrageously funny material.”

“I think that that would be the best approach. I’m very proud of the film… I’m in a good place with Mrs. Doubtfire, so there’s really no reason to do the definitive cut. The definitive cut of Mrs. Doubtfire is out in the world right now,” he concluded.

An NC-17 Version of 'Mrs. Doubtfire' Allegedly Exists & Twitter Has Mixed Thoughts

Twitter is debating what an NC-17 version of the movie Mrs. Doubtfire might look like after its existence was teased in a viral tweet.

The account @FactsOnFilm tweeted on Thursday (March 18) that there are multiple cuts of the beloved 1993 movie.

“While filming Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Robin Williams improvised so much that there were PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17 cuts of the film,” the account said.

There are a lot of fans who are so excited over the prospect of an explicit version of the family film and many are comparing it to the Snyder cut of Justice League, which was released this week. Others are saying that an NC-17 version is likely very transphobic and would not be appropriate for people to see.

Zelda Williams Explains Why She'll Stay Away From Twitter on Anniversary of Dad Robin's Death

Zelda Williams will not be making an appearance on social media tomorrow, which marks the anniversary of her father, Robin Williams‘ death.

The 31-year-old actress posted a message to her fans about her absence, which she has been doing since her tragic passing in 2014.

“Tomorrow is Dad’s death anniversary. As always, I will not be here,” she writes. “It’s hard for me on regular, good days to remain the person expected to graciously accept the world’s need to share their memories of him and express their condolences for his loss.”

Zelda continues, “As I’ve said in the past, while I am constantly touched by all of your boundless continued love for him, some days it can feel a bit like being seen as a roadside memorial – a place, not a person – where people drive past and leave their sentiments to then go about their days comforted their love for him was witnessed.”

“But sometimes, that leaves me emotionally buried under a pile of other’s memories instead of my own. After all, even roses by the truckload still weigh a ton. Tomorrow, it is simply too much.”

She adds, “In my stead, if you find yourself in crisis and seek out this page hoping to be close to him somehow, please, use any of the following resources if you find you need them. Whoever out there needs to hear it, please use this as your signpost in the desert. Reach out. Seek Help. Keep fighting.”

The resources Zelda listed include Suicide Prevention Hotlines from all over the world, SAMHSA’s National Helpline for Substance Abuse, Anxiety and Depression Association of America’s support group, and many, many others.
