Rita Moreno is apologizing for her recent comments.

Earlier this week, the 89-year-old Oscar-winning actress defended pal Lin-Manuel Miranda and director John M. Chu for not casting more dark-skinned Afro-Latinx performers in In The Heights.

“It’s like you can never do right, it seems. This is the man who literally has brought Latino-ness and Puerto Rican-ness to America,” Rita said in defense of Lin-Manuel.

After receiving backlash, Rita took to Twitter on Wednesday (June 16) to apologize for her comments.

The 89-year-old West Side Story icon and her 54-year-old daughter hit the red carpet in style together at the 2021 Academy Awards on Sunday (April 25) at Union Station in Los Angeles.

Rita is one of the many celebrity presenters at this evening’s ceremony.

Fernanda is the only daughter of the EGOT winner and her late husband, Dr. Leonard Gordon, who was a cardiologist before his death. She herself took on acting in roles in projects like Adventures Of Brisco County, Jr, Mister Rogers and An Inconvenient Woman.

Ansel Elgort and newcomer Rachel Zegler star in the film as Tony and Maria alongside EGOT winner Rita Moreno as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works. The film tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City.

For those that don’t know, Rita played the role of Anita in the original film and won an Oscar for her performance. Her role in the remake was created specifically for her!

West Side Story was supposed to hit theaters in December 2020, but the release date was delayed until December 10, 2021 because of the pandemic.

Rita Moreno is returning to the world of the Jets and Sharks in the upcoming West Side Story remake.

The 88-year-old EGOT winner, who won the Oscar for her role as Anita in the original version, opened up in her interview with SiriusXM about her special role.

Turns out that her role of Valentina was specifically created just for her and it was the film’s scriptwriter’s partner who suggested her for it.

“Doc was the actor or the man who ran the candy store where both gangs hangout now and then,” Rita shared. “The part was really underwritten, I remember feeling sorry for the actor.”

She continued, “Then his [Tony Kushner] partner said ‘why don’t you get Rita Moreno to play Doc’s widow?’ And it turned out that Tony was a huge fan of myself and I didn’t know that.”

West Side Story is due out in theaters this Christmas.

Christina Applegate, Alison Brie, and Betty Gilpin slay the red carpet as they arrive at the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday (January 12) at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif.

Christina and Alison are both nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series while Betty is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Other stars in attendance included The Other Two actress Molly Shannon, One Day At a Time actresses Rita Moreno and Justina Machado, along with The Good Place stars D’Arcy Carden and William Jackson Harper.
