Disney & Pixar's 'Onward' Available Early on Digital Tonight Amid Coronavirus Pandemic!

Disney and Pixar’s Onward is being released early from theaters to our home TVs amid the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The fantasy adventure, starring Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as elf brothers, will be available to buy digitally and on movies anywhere for $19.99 starting tonight (March 20) at 5pm PT/ 8pm ET. It hits Disney Plus on April 3 in the U.S.

“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” said director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae in a statement.

Onward opened to $39.1 million in theaters on March 6. It topped newcomers Bloodshot (Sony), The Hunt (Universal) and I Still Believe (Lionsgate) last weekend, which are all also set to be released for digital purchase early as well.

'Onward' Has One of Pixar's Lowest Opening Weekends at the Box Office, Possibly Due to Coronavirus Fears

Onward is on top at the box office – but the number isn’t very impressive for a Pixar movie.

The film brought in $40 million across 4,310 theaters in North America in its opening weekend, according to THR on Sunday (March 8).

The opening marks one of the lowest openings for Pixar – and it may be due to coronavirus.

“It’s unclear how much of an impact worries over the coronavirus had on moviegoing in the U.S. this weekend, or whether Onward faced its own challenges. Comparisons to last year — when Captain Marvel opened to $153 million — were always going to be brutal. Overall, revenue for the weekend was down more than 50 percent from the same frame in 2019,” THR reported.

The movie has an 86% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore.

Onward was also banned in some countries because of a scene – find out why.

Disney's 'Onward' Is Being Banned in Middle East Countries Due to This LGBT Reference

Onward is being banned in several Middle East countries.

The family animation film from Disney’s Pixar is being banned in certain markets due to a minor reference to a lesbian relationship, Deadline reported on Friday (March 6).

The movie follows two teenage elf brothers (voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland) who embark on a quest for magic. At one point, there is a reference to a lesbian relationship between secondary characters.

In the scene, the brothers are disguised as their mother’s centaur boyfriend, Officer Bronco, and talk about parenting with two female police officers. A purple cyclops officer named Specter (voiced by Lena Waithe) commiserates with Officer Bronco, saying “It’s not easy being a new parent – my girlfriend’s daughter got me pulling my hair out, okay?”

Specter is considered Disney’s first openly gay character.

Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have all banned the film due to the reference, although other Middle East markets, including Bahrain, Dubai, Lebanon and Egypt are still showing the film.

Russia has censored the scene by changing the word “girlfriend” to “partner,” and avoids mentioning Specter’s gender.

If you’re planning to see Onward, find out if you should stick around for a scene beyond the credits.

Lena Waithe to Voice Disney's First LGBTQ Animated Character

The new Disney and Pixar movie Onward is hitting theaters very soon and it will make history as the studio’s first animated film to feature an openly LGBTQ character.

Lena Waithe, who is an openly gay screenwriter and actor, will be voicing the role of Officer Spector, a Cyclops cop. Without giving away too many spoilers, in the film, the character mentions that she has a girlfriend with a daughter.

“It just kind of happened,” Onward producer Kori Rae told Yahoo Entertainment. “The scene, when we wrote it, was kind of fitting and it opens up the world a little bit, and that’s what we wanted.”

Director Dan Scanlon added, “It’s a modern fantasy world and we want to represent the modern world.”
