Naomi Osaka Wears Trayvon Martin Mask to U.S. Open

Naomi Osaka is powerfully speaking out – even without saying anything.

The 22-year-old tennis star entered Arthur Ashe Stadium for the U.S. Open on Sunday (September 6) wearing a black face mask that read “Trayvon Martin,” drawing attention to the unarmed Black teenage who was murdered by a neighborhood watchman back in 2012.

Naomi has worn different masks bearing different names throughout the tennis tournament, and says she has one for all seven rounds if she continues to win.

“I remember Trayvon’s death clearly. I remember being a kid and just feeling scared, irreverent info but I actually didn’t wear hoodies for years cause I wanted to decrease the odds of ‘looking suspicious’. I know his death wasn’t the first, but for me it was the one that opened my eyes to what was going on,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I remember watching the events unfold on tv and wondering what was taking so long, why was justice not being served. To see the same things happening over and over still is sad. Things have to change,” she continued.

She also wore a mask bearing Breonna Taylor‘s name in round one, and a mask with Ahmaud Arbery‘s name as well afterward.

“I actually have seven [masks], and it’s quite sad that seven masks isn’t enough for the amount of names, so hopefully I’ll get to the finals and you can see all of them,” she said after the first win.

“None of these deaths had to happen. I just want everyone to know the names,” she told reporters.

There was a shocking disqualification at the U.S. Open over the weekend.

Tennis Star Naomi Osaka Honors Another Murdered Black Person During Third Round at US Open 2020

Naomi Osaka has worn another mask with a murdered Black person’s name to the third round of the 2020 US Open.

The 22-year-old tennis superstar showed her support for the victims of police violence with a third mask with Ahmaud Arbery‘s name on it.

“This did not have to happen, none of these deaths had to happen,” Naomi shared with reporters after her winning match against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. “I just want everyone to know the names more.”

Earlier in the week, Naomi also wore masks with Breonna Taylor, and Elijah McClain‘s names on them, and she has four more – one for every stage of competition until the finals.

“It’s quite sad that seven masks isn’t enough for the amount of names, so hopefully I’ll get to the finals so you can see all of them,” Naomi previously shared with press, adding that she’s “aware that tennis is watched all over the world, and maybe there is someone that doesn’t know Breonna Taylor’s story. Maybe they’ll, like, Google it or something.”

“For me, (it’s about) just spreading awareness. I feel like the more people know the story, then the more interesting or interested they’ll become in it.”

Just last week, Naomi made the announcement that she wouldn’t be playing in the 2020 Western & Southern Open after another Black man, Jacob Blake, was targeted and shot in the back by law enforcement. Just hours later, it was announced that the event was pausing games.

UPDATE: It has been announced that 2020 Western & Southern Open will be pausing games on Thursday (August 27) in protest of the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

Naomi Osaka will not being playing in her semifinals match at the 2020 Western & Southern Open on Thursday (August 27) amid racial injustice in the United States.

The 22-year-old tennis pro announced on Wednesday night (August 27) that she is protesting her match after the recent police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin.

“Hello, as many of you are aware I was scheduled to play my semifinals match tomorrow. However, before I am a athlete, I am a black woman,” Naomi wrote. “And as a black woman I feel as though there are much more important matters at hand that need immediate attention, rather than watching me play tennis.”

“I don’t expect anything drastic to happen with me not playing, but if I can get a conversation started in a majority white sport I consider that a step in the right direction,” Naomi continued. “Watching the continued genocide of Black people at the hand of the police is honestly making me sick to my stomach. I’m exhausted of having a new hashtag pop up every few days and I’m extremely tired of having this same conversation over and over again. When will it ever be enough? #JacobBlake, #BreonnaTaylor, #ElijahMcclain, #GeorgeFloyd”

Naomi‘s decision to not play comes after the NBA Playoff Games were postponed after pro basketball teams decided to boycott their games.
