J.J. Abrams, Bruce Timm & Matt Reeves to Helm 'Batman: Caped Crusader' at HBO Max

A new animated Batman series are coming to HBO Max and Cartoon Network!

Variety reports that the new show, Batman: Caped Crusader, will be produced by Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm alongside The Batman director Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams.

Bruce Timm‘s Batman: The Animated Series ran from 1992-1995 for a total of 85 episodes and was one of the most critically lauded entries in the DC onscreen canon, garnering praise for its dark storytelling.

In a joint statement, the trio said, “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

HBO Max just announced that another iconic superhero would be getting an animated series at the network.

'The Batman' Companion TV Series Coming to HBO Max!

The Batman is getting an accompanying TV series.

HBO Max gave a series commitment to a DC Comics original drama set in the Gotham City police department from The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter, Deadline reported Friday (July 10).

The series is “set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature and will build upon the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series will extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of complex characters of Gotham.”

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream,” Matt Reeves said.

It’s not yet known if Batman himself will be among the show’s characters.

“Our collaboration with Warner Bros. and DC allows us to elaborate and grow fan connections across these powerful brands for years to come. This is Batman as most audiences have never seen before, and we know fans will want to spend more time in this new world inspired by the film,” said HBO Max exec Kevin Reilly.

The Batman, the movie, is set to be released in October of 2021. If you haven’t seen it yet, watch Robert Pattinson‘s screen test in the iconic outfit!

'The Batman' Director Matt Reeves Gives Update on Film During Coronavirus Hiatus

Matt Reeves is updating fans on the status of The Batman.

Production on the 53-year-old director’s movie, starring Robert Pattinson, is currently on hold due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.

“We’re not officially editing right now,” Matt told Deadline, “We’ve actually shot a quarter of the movie and I have been pouring through dailies, looking at takes, and what’s to come.”

Matt is currently quarantined in London, England, where shooting last took place. They were going to move from London to Liverpool before that was called off.

When asked if the film would need to completely relocate outside of the UK for safety, Matt replied, “It’s way too early to say, I can’t imagine we wouldn’t finish in London. The situation is fluid.”

Matt added that he doesn’t plan to re-write anything as of right now: “It took me two years to work on that story, and it’s a very specific mystery noir that’s been really thought out by me and my partners.”

What he might reconsider, though, is “the tone of things. It happens any time you shoot anything. The unexpected — happy accidents and things you didn’t quite expect: That is the lightning in a bottle for something that is alive. I would say that the changes really have to do with ‘Oh, seeing the tone of this with these scenes we haven’t done which connect to that part of the storyline. It feels like there might be an opportunity to explore some of that unexpected tone that we found.’ With these movies you never have enough prep time because they’re so complex and so enormous in so many ways. It also gives me a moment to think about the larger sequences that have yet to come up and how I want to realize those.”

If you missed the news, the movie’s dialect coach Andrew Jack has sadly died from COVID-19.

“He was a lovely and special person and it’s one of those things where it makes you re-prioritize and realize how fragile everything is,” Matt Reeves shared. “I’m tremendously focused on the movie, and of course, it’s nice to be able to stop, but the real thing I’ve been thinking about is the state the world is in, and hoping that everyone is going to be OK and that everyone is going to social distance and do everything to be safe because it’s a very scary time.”

The Batman just got a release date!

The upcoming installment in the Batman series will be hitting theaters on June 25, 2021, Deadline reported on Wednesday (January 30).

Matt Reeves will write and direct the film, which will not star Ben Affleck as the leading superhero after portraying Batman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Justice League.

The reason is because this movie will focus on “a younger Bruce Wayne.”

“Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see @MattReevesLA vision come to life,” Ben tweeted when the news was announced.

Amiah Miller and Andy Serkis looked sharp at the screening of their new film War for the Planet of the Apes tonight!

The 12-year-old actress and the 53-year-old actor hit the red carpet on Monday (July 10) at SVA Theatre in New York City.

They were joined by their co-stars Woody Harrelson, Aleks Paunovic, Steve Zahn, Karin Konoval, Terry Notary, Chad Rook, Gabriel Chavarria, Dean Redman, Sara Canning, Max Lloyd-Jones, and director Matt Reeves.

“[Matt] really wanted to put the audience into the head of being a chimpanzee because that’s what these movies are about, they are a great metaphor for being able to see ourselves,” Andy told ABC7. “I think this is really powerful, this movie, and it’s a very emotional film. It’s also got great humor in it. It’s an epic, it’s a mythic story. I think it’s a brilliant blockbuster with heart and a lot of intelligence.”

Woody said about Andy, “I think, you know, he might be the greatest actor I’ve ever worked with. He’s extraordinary, he’s [got] the most expressive eyes, he can say nothing and communicate more than almost any other actor.”

'The Batman' Confirms a Director, 'Nightwing' Movie in the Works

Matt Reeves has been confirmed as the director of the upcoming movie The Batman, a standalone film about the superhero starring Ben Affleck.

The actor was originally going to direct himself in the film, but he dropped out of the position after his schedule got too packed. Matt previously directed Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and he is in post-production right now on War for the Planet of the Apes.

“I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen,” Matt said in a statement (via Deadline).

In other Batman news, Warner Bros. is currently planning a standalone movie for the character Nightwing, who is known for being the original Robin in the Batman comics.

Chris McKay, who just helmed The Lego Batman Movie, is in talks to direct the film, according to THR.

Matt Reeves No Longer In Talks to Direct 'The Batman'

Matt Reeves is no longer in the running to direct the upcoming The Batman film, according to THR.

The 50-year-old director was reportedly in early talks to direct the flick after Ben Affleck stepped down from the position.

A studio source confirmed that negotiations have broken down and Matt has exited the talks, just a week after they began.

Matt is currently deep in post-production on Planet of the Apes sequel, War for the Planet of the Apes.

Before negotiations began, directors Ridley Scott and Fede Alvarez were rumored to be contenders for the coveted spot.
