The 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards now has a date.

The ceremony, dedicated to independent filmmakers, will be taking place on April 24, 2021, organizers confirmed on Tuesday (June 16) amid the global health crisis.

The news comes just after it was revealed that the 2021 Academy Awards ceremony, which was originally supposed to air on February 28, 2021, has been pushed to April 25, 2021.

The annual event always takes place one day before the Oscars on Saturday afternoon near the Santa Monica Pier.

“The Film Independent Spirit Awards will take place on Saturday, April 24, 2021. Additionally, we will recognize films that were released between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021 in acknowledgement of the unique challenges the world of cinema, and the world as a whole, is currently experiencing,” Josh Welsh, President of Film Independent, said in a statement, via Deadline.

Laura Dern was honored in the best way at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 8) at the pier in Santa Monica, Calif.

The Gay Men’s Choir of Los Angeles appeared during the show to sing a song about how movies are gayer than you think. The end of the song was all dedicated to Laura and how amazing she is in Marriage Story and other movies!

“Laura Dern kicking her feet up on the couch / Laura Dern ordering a kale salad / Laura Dern dressed slutty in court / Just all of Laura Dern,” the choir sang before just chanting her name over and over again.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Glee star Alex Newell then came on stage and belted out Laura’s name while she danced in the audience!

During the event, Laura and the ensemble of Marriage Story was honored with the Robert Altman Award.

Renee Zellweger is a winner!

The 50-year-old actress took home the award for Best Female Lead for her role in Judy at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 8) at the pier in Santa Monica, Calif.

During her acceptance speech, Renee paid tribute to the late Judy Garland.

“I know that this is a reflection of the resounding affection for Judy Garland and her legacy,” Renee said. “So, cheers to you from the beach. Ms. Garland, this is for you.”

Bob Odenkirk and Giancarlo Esposito share a laugh on stage at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 8) at the pier in Santa Monica, Calif.

The Better Call Saul co-stars took to the stage to present an award together.

Other stars at the event included fellow Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn, comedian Jim Gaffigan, the Old Spice guy Isaiah Mustafa, and Big Mouth star/creator Nick Kroll.

So many stars stepped out at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards and lots of the cool moments inside the event weren’t seen on TV.

Celebs were out of their seats and mingling with friends during commercial breaks at the awards show on Saturday afternoon (February 8) at the pier in Santa Monica, Calif.

Jennifer Lopez was seen catching up with America Ferrera, Richard Jewell co-stars Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde shared a cute moment, Joey King met up with Honey Boy‘s Noah Jupe, and more.

Adam Sandler appears on stage to accept the award for Best Actor at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 8) at the pier in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 53-year-old actor won the award for his work in Uncut Gems after being snubbed by most awards shows, including the Oscars.

Adam gave an incredible acceptance speech and it will probably go down in history as one of the best awards show speeches of all time.

One of the first things he said was an acknowledgment to the other nominees. He said, “I’d like to also give a shout-out to my fellow nominees, who will now and forever be known as ‘the guys who lost to f—ing Adam Sandler’”

Adam talked about losing the “Best Looking” superlative in high school and instead being given “Best Personality.”

“Tonight as I look around this room I realize that the Independent Spirit Awards are the ‘best personality’ awards of Hollywood,” Adam said. “So, when all those feather-haired douchebag motherf–kers go to get their Oscars tomorrow night, their handsome good looks will fade in time, but our independent personalities will shine on forever.”

Adam also made sure to thank all of the people who made comedies with him over the years.

Zazie Beetz strikes a pose on the blue carpet while arriving at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 8) at the pier in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 29-year-old Joker actress looked pretty in a white, ruffled dress covered in red hearts as she was joined at the event by longtime love David Rysdahl.
