Grease fans will love this news – a prequel series is on the way!

According to Variety, Paramount+ has now optioned the series, taking over from HBO Max.

The prequel will still be a musical and still take place at Rydell High and focus on the Pink Ladies.

The original title was just Grease: Rydell High, has been reimagined as Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.

The show will center on how Sandy, Rizzo, Jan, Marty and Frenchy came together and how the reverence, fear and moral panic they sparked changed Rydell forever.

Rise of the Pink Ladies is also reported to feature a handful of new songs, and could potentially include the iconic numbers from the 1978 film.

Earlier this summer, it was confirmed that a prequel movie called Summer Lovin’ is also in the works.

Late last year, original stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John donned their Danny and Sandy costumes for a special event.

'Grease' Prequel Movie Is Moving Forward, Director is Hired!

Summer Lovin’, a prequel to the movie Grease, is in the works at Paramount Pictures and the movie is making big moves right now!

Brett Haley was just hired to direct the film. This will be his first movie at a major studio after directing indie movies like Hearts Beat Loud and I’ll See You in My Dreams, according to Deadline.

Grease was a 1978 musical movie that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The prequel will reportedly follow what happened what Danny and Sandy met over the summer.

Grease remains one of the most successful movie musicals of all time and it has been a big hit on Broadway as well. A live production of the musical was recently staged by Fox starring Aaron Tveit and Julianne Hough in the lead roles.

The Tony Awards Will Be Replaced By a 'Grease' Sing-a-long & People Are Not Happy

The 2020 Tony Awards was scheduled to take place on June 7, but the show has been indefinitely postponed due to the pandemic, so CBS has decided to fill that slot with a Grease singalong special.

The network has announced that the broadcast television premiere of Grease Sing-A-Long will air as part of the Sunday Night Movies lineup on June 7.

Fans are not happy that Broadway will not be given a national spotlight during that time slot, especially since the community is hurting so hard right now. It was just announced that Frozen, which has been a hit show on Broadway for two years, has officially closed and will not return when theaters are allowed to reopen. Many more shows are expected to follow.

Many fans have suggested that a virtual live stream event should be broadcast in the Tony Awards’ time slot. Another idea being thrown around is a special that shows highlights of past Tony Awards.

Grease is getting a 2019 spinoff!

The iconic 1978 John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John co-starring film serves as the inspiration to an upcoming musical series Grease: Rydell High coming to HBO Max, TVLine reported on Tuesday (October 15).

The show will explore “the peer pressures of high school, the horrors of puberty and the rollercoaster of life in middle America with a modern sensibility that will bring it to life for today’s musical lovers.”

The series will be set in the 1950s when “the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds still rule the school,” and will feature “some characters you already know, and a whole lot more you will soon meet.”

The musical will include hit songs from the time period and originals.

“This is high school and life in small-town USA told on the scale of a big rock ‘n’ roll musical. It’s Grease 2.0 but with the same spirit, energy and excitement you immediately think of when you hear any of these iconic songs,” said HBO Max exec Sarah Aubrey.
