ABC has announced the fate of The Good Doctor.

The long-running medical drama will be back for a fifth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and is actually the first of the network’s scripted series to score a renewal for the upcoming season.

The Good Doctor averages about 8.4 million viewers per episode, including a week of delayed viewing. It trails only Grey’s Anatomy, but just a little, as that series gets around 8.41 million.

The series centers on Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a young autistic surgeon who has savant syndrome, relocates from a quiet country life to join the surgical unit at the prestigious San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital — a move strongly supported by his mentor, Dr. Aaron Glassman.

Having survived a troubled childhood, Shaun is alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, but he finds his niche using his extraordinary medical skill and intuition to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues.

The Good Doctor, which airs Mondays, also stars Hill Harper, Christina Chang, Paige Spara, Will Yun Lee, Noah Galvin, Fiona Gubelmann, Antonia Thomas and Richard Schiff.

New details about the show were recently revealed by one of the producers.

Freddie Highmore is revealing the specific reason the Coronavirus is a concern on the set of The Good Doctor.

The 28-year-old actor visited Jimmy Kimmel Live! for an appearance on Monday (March 2) in Los Angeles.

He told host Jimmy Kimmel, “They called us all into set the other day and said, ‘You know, we know you’re all really worried about the Coronavirus, but you gotta stop taking the surgical masks from the set because were running out.’”

Freddie Highmore also discussed his excessive birthday celebration that was thrown for him on set, how he got his start acting, and more.

ABC has revealed the fate of The Good Doctor, and renewed it for a fourth season on the network.

“The Good Doctor has been a cornerstone on Monday nights and is one of those special heartfelt series that fearlessly tackles inclusivity,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said in a statement.

“David Shore’s thoughtful storytelling, combined with an incredible cast led by Freddie Highmore’s nuanced performance as Dr. Shaun Murphy, are what have made this series a breakout hit over the past three seasons, and I’m excited to see where they take us next.”

Freddie Highmore leads the series as autistic surgeon Shaun Murphy, who overcomes personal and professional hurdles while working at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.

Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzalez, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, Christina Chang, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, Jasika Nicole and Paige Spara also star in the series.

The Good Doctor currently airs on Mondays at 10 p.m. on ABC.

Lots of actors stepped out for ABC’s event during the Disney Upfront Experience on Tuesday (May 14) at Lincoln Center in New York City.

FX and National Geographic had their upfronts as part of the Disney Upfront Experience and stars there included Fargo‘s Chris Rock, Pose‘s Billy Porter and MJ Rodriguez, Mayans M.C.‘s JD Pardo, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Kaitlin Olson, and Brain Games host Keegan-Michael Key. Also there was Lil Dicky, who has a comedy headed to FX.

The 27-year-old actor was in attendance at the photocall for The Good Doctor on Tuesday (March 26) in Madrid, Spain.

The television series, which premiered in 2017, is about Shaun Murphy (Highmore), a young surgeon with autism and Savant syndrome, who is recruited into the surgical unit of a prestigious hospital.

The show, which is executive produced by House creator David Shore, was renewed by ABC for a third season in February. It currently airs on Mondays at 10 p.m. on the network.

On the show, Freddie mentioned that his birthday was on February 14, aka Valentine’s Day.

Jimmy asked if that was a good birth date or a bad birth date.

“You always get a card, even if it’s not from the person you want!” Freddie replied. He then explained that this past February, his friends organized a birthday dinner on Valentine’s Day but it was at a very romantic restaurant!

Freddie Highmore wears a cool bow tie at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday (January 13) at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 26-year-old The Good Doctor actor is nominated for Best Drama Actor for his role in the ABC series.
