Fans Rave About Netflix's Archeology Movie 'The Dig' With Carey Mulligan & Ralph Fiennes

Netflix‘s new movie, The Dig, just premiered tonight and fans are praising the film on social media.

The movie centers on Edith Pretty, played by Carey Mulligan, a wealthy widow who’s raising a young son on a vast country estate. With World War II looming and the vast majority of England’s professional archeologists tasked with protecting and preserving Britain’s museums, she turns to Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes), an amateur excavator to dig up the multiple mounds on her property.

While first thinking there was something from the Viking era, it was actually a burial ship from the 7th century, the Dark Ages of the Anglo-Saxons that would change much of what Britons knew about their own history.

Based on a true story, the dig uncovered the Sutton Hoo, which is rumored to have been the burial place of King Raedwald, the 7th Century Anglo-Saxon ruler of East Anglia.

“They’re not a natural pair and in fact, as you see at the beginning, it’s not an immediate connection,” Carey shared about the relationship between Edith and Basil. “But there’s a mutual respect there – a kinship and a meeting of minds that crosses the social divide.”

There’s also a scene in the movie which Ralph has described as his “Indiana Jones moment.”

“That’s the closest I’m going to get!” he shared. “But there was no real danger. I was actually more anxious about the scrabbling and the frantic hands close to my face – they were going to give me more injury than the weight of the earth.”

After the movie premiered, fans flocked to Twitter and Instagram, sharing their thoughts on the movie.

Carey Mulligan Explains Why She Called Out Variety's 'Promising Young Woman' Review

Carey Mulligan is reacting to a review.

The 35-year-old actress first responded to Variety‘s review of Promising Young Woman in a profile for the New York Times in December.

“I read the Variety review, because I’m a weak person,” she explained, saying that the review suggested she wasn’t “hot enough to pull off this kind of ruse,” but said she wasn’t mentioning it because her feelings were hurt.

“It wasn’t some sort of ego-wounding thing — like, I fully can see that Margot Robbie is a goddess.” The review also suggested that Margot, who served as a producer, might have been a better choice for the role of Cassie.

“It drove me so crazy…I was like, ‘Really? For this film, you’re going to write something that is so transparent? Now? In 2020?’ I just couldn’t believe it,” she went on to say.

Variety then added an editor’s note at the top of the review: “Variety sincerely apologizes to Carey Mulligan and regrets the insensitive language and insinuation in our review of Promising Young Woman that minimized her daring performance.”

In a new interview with Zendaya for Variety‘s Actors on Actors, she further elaborated on calling out the outlet.

“I feel it’s important that criticism is constructive. I think it’s important that we are looking at the right things when it comes to work, and we’re looking at the art, and we’re looking at the performance and the way that a film is made. And I don’t think that goes to the appearance of an actor or your personal preference for what an actor does or doesn’t look like, which it felt that that article did,” she said.

“Which for me felt disappointing, because obviously the film is sort of tackling issues around our perceptions and our preconceived ideas about people. In the broadest sense, I think there’s an element to where we have idealized women on screen for so long that I think we start to lose sight of what women really look like. When I worked with Steve McQueen on Shame, he said, ‘Really, what we’re all doing is holding up a mirror. That’s what we do as storytellers,’” she went on to explain.

“And I think if women continually look on screen and don’t see themselves, that’s not helpful for women or for anyone, really — that we’re not going to tell authentic stories. So I think in criticizing or sort of bemoaning a lack of attractiveness on my part in a character, it wasn’t a personal slight, it wasn’t something that I felt. It didn’t wound my ego, but it made me concerned that in such a big publication, an actress’ appearance could be criticized and it could be that, you know, that could be accepted as completely reasonable criticism. I think it’s important to call out those things, because they seem small and they seem insignificant. People around me at the time said, Oh, you know, get over it. Whatever. It’s great — it’s a great review. Or whatever: People love the film,” she continued.

“But it stuck with me, because I think it’s these kind of every day moments that add up — that mean that we start to edit the way that women appear on screen, and we want them to look a certain way. We want to airbrush them, and we want to make them look perfect. Or we want to edit the way that they work, the way they move, and the way that they think and behave. And I think we need to see real women portrayed on screen and in all of their complexity. So I felt that it was one small thing to point out that could be helpful.”

Carey Mulligan Reveals How Taylor Swift's Music Accidentally Made Her Cause a Scene at a Train Station

Carey Mulligan has a Taylor Swift story!

The 35-year-old actress made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday (December 16).

During her appearance, she told the story of an embarrassing moment she just had while trying to deliver presents in a suitcase, which started off with her waiting for a train.

“It was one of those kid-free moments where I had, like, a latte, and I was listening to music, and I was listening to Taylor Swift, and I was like, ”Tis the damn season,’ and I was so in my little zone.”

“Like a very conscientious person, I realized I should sanitize—because COVID. And so I sort of reached into my pocket to get the sanitizer out. And as I was sanitizing my hand, I saw this sort of motion out the corner of my eye. And then [I] turned, with music still blaring, to see my suitcase in the middle of the train tracks and it had just sort of rolled on,” she went on to say.

“And my coffee was down there, as well. For somehow, in my panic, I’d sort of thrown my coffee…then this sort of station master man came along and I said like, ‘I can just get it. There’s, like, 10 minutes ’til the train comes.’ And he’s like, ‘No, you can’t just get it. You can’t just walk onto a train track and try and retrieve a suitcase.’”

“So anyway, it ended up being like seven guys in hi-vis jackets, and they made an announcement and the whole train station is looking at me because they knew it was my fault that the train was delayed, and I wanted to be asked to just swallow me up. [I was] thankfully in my big face mask just hiding,” she continued.

If you didn’t know, Carey’s husband Marcus Mumford collaborated with Taylor on the evermore track “cowboy like me.”

Taylor Swift made a surprising revelation of her own about her hair while recording the album.
