Nielsen used a measurement called “The Gauge” to conduct their study and according to the graphic, streaming made up 26 percent of TV usage in May versus the 25 percent for over-the-air networks.

Netflix and YouTube led the pack, comprising 12 percent of the time Americans spend in front of their TVs.

Cable made up the largest portion, scoring 39 percent of usage in May, while the rest of the TV-viewing pie was other activities like gaming and playback of physical media.

The company announced their plans to start measuring streaming back in April and started with to platforms: Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, Fox’s AVOD service Tubi, Pluto TV, Comcast, Charter Spectrum and Sling TV.

Senior VP of Product Strategy at Nielsen Brian Fuhrer said of the report, “Even as people begin to dive back into their pre-pandemic activities, based on the changes many made to enable streaming coupled with the variety of newly introduced services, we expect people to keep sampling and exploring their options. Maybe just as importantly, as production ramps back up, new content will enter the space, driving additional traction.”

Last year, a poll revealed which streaming services were most popular amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
