Will Archie & Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor Ever Be a Prince or Princess? Here's The Answer

Prince Charles is now the grandfather of five, following the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s daughter, Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor.

The newborn’s arrival re-upped the question if she or her older brother, Archie, would ever be called a Princess or Prince.

According to the current guidelines of the monarchy, great-grandchildren of the monarch are not princes or princesses, except for children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales.

This is why Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – all carry the title but Archie and Lilibet don’t. At least as of right now.

However, when Prince Charles ascends to the throne and becomes King, Harry and Meghan’s children will automatically be given the title of prince and princess, as they are children of a son of the king.

This rule was put into law by King George V (Queen Elizabeth‘s grandfather) after he issued a Letters Patent in 1917.

It reads: “…the grandchildren of the sons of any such sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of dukes of these our realms.”

While Archie and Lilibet will be given the titles, it’s not for certain they would ever use them or if Harry and Meghan want their children given them at all.

Meghan previously opened up about Archie‘s lack of a title in her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.
