The Academy Would Not Let Anthony Hopkins Appear on Zoom, According to New Report

A new report, which was reportedly confirmed by Anthony Hopkins‘ reps, suggests what he was not allowed to do during the 2021 Oscars.

If you don’t know, on Sunday (April 25), Anthony won the final award of the evening: Best Actor for his stunning performance in The Father.

Well, after winning, the show abruptly ended because Anthony was not in attendance in person. He’s 83 years old and was in his native Wales during this stage of the pandemic. The Academy set up international “hubs” for nominees so they could give speeches at the hubs, but did not want to have anyone over Zoom.

Anthony‘s reps told IndieWire that he had “no desire to travel to hubs in Dublin or London” and they “pleaded for him to be allowed to Zoom.” The Academy said no, so Anthony went to sleep and did not watch live. He gave his acceptance speech when he awoke the next morning.

New York Times journalist Kyle Buchanan also spoke to the rumor.
