15 Bombshells We Learned From Meghan Markle & Prince Harry's Oprah Interview
The interview we’ve all been waiting for has finally aired! Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A Primetime Special, a special interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, aired moments ago on CBS.
This is the very first time that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for a tell all since they officially exited their roles as senior members of the royal family.
The interview did not disappoint! There were two hours worth of quotes, bombshells, and big reveals including talk about the royal family, falsehoods about them, their son Archie, and more.

1. MEGHAN ENTERED THE ROYAL FAMILY “NAIVELY”
“I went into it naively. I didn’t grow up knowing much about the royal family. It wasn’t a part of the conversation at home. It wasn’t something that we followed,” Meghan said.
When asked if she researched Prince Harry during their courtship, she responded, “I didn’t do any research. I’ve never looked up my husband. I just didn’t feel the need to.”
2. MEGHAN DISPUTES A BIG RUMORED STORY ABOUT HER & KATE MIDDLETON
Meghan Markle spoke to the rumor that she made Kate Middleton cry in 2018 ahead of her wedding over flower girl dresses.
“The narrative with Kate that didn’t happen was really difficult,” Meghan Markle said in response to this story.
“Did you make Kate cry?” Oprah said.
“No!” Meghan responded.
“Where did that come from? Was there a situation where she might have cried?” Oprah asked.
“No. The reverse happened. I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone. It was a hard week of the wedding. She was upset about something. She owned it. She apologized. She brought me flowers [and] a note apologizing,” Meghan said. “What was shocking was…six, seven months after our wedding…the reverse of that would be out there in the world. I would have never wanted that to come out about her.”
“A few days before the wedding she was upset about something…about flower girl dresses. It made me cry…it really hurt my feelings,” she said.
“She’s a good person. I think so much of what I’ve seen play out is this idea of polarity. If you love her, you don’t need to hate me,” Meghan said about the differences between them.
3. MEGHAN AND HARRY GOT MARRIED BEFORE THEIR WEDDING!
“Three days before our wedding, we got married,” Meghan told Oprah. “Nobody knows this,” she added.
Meghan shared that she and Harry wanted to have a private moment before their formal wedding ceremony that was televised. The pair were married by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the backyard.
“Just the three of us,” Prince Harry laughed.
4. A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL FAMILY WAS CONCERNED ABOUT ARCHIE’S SKIN TONE AT BIRTH
“[There were] concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” Meghan revealed about Archie, who was born in May of 2019.
This caused Oprah to say, “WHAT? There’s a conversation with you about how dark your baby is going to be?”
“Potentially, and what that would mean or look like,” Meghan said.
“And you’re not gonna tell me who?,” Oprah said.
“I think that would be very damaging to them,” Meghan responded.
Meghan also spoke about the royal family refusing to give him a royal title at birth.
“While I was pregnant [the royal family] said they want to change the convention for Archie [and not give him a title],” Meghan said. By not giving him a title, Archie would not be entitled to protection and security.
“It’s not their right to take it away,” Meghan said. “And yet, they did. Even though I have a lot of clarity on what comes with the titles, good and bad, and, from my experience, a lot of pain. I, again, wouldn’t wish pain on my child, but that is their birthright to then make a choice about.”
“The idea of the first member of color in this family not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be…” she added.
5. MEGHAN WAS HAVING SUICIDAL THOUGHTS BEFORE MEGXIT
“I didn’t want to be alive anymore. That was a very clear and real and frightening…constant thought,” Meghan shared with Oprah.
“I was really ashamed to say it at the time, and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry especially, because I know how much loss he has suffered, but I knew that if I didn’t say it, that I would do it — and I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” Meghan said.
“It was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought,” Meghan recalled. “I remember how he just cradled me, and … I went to the institution, and I said I needed to go somewhere to get help … and I was told that I couldn’t.”
Meghan said that she begged the institution – which she explains is a small group of members that work for the Royal Family – to help her get help, but they told her she couldn’t get it.
“Were you having suicidal thoughts?” Oprah asked.
“Yes, this was very, very clear,” Meghan responded. “Very clear and very scary. And I didn’t even know who to turn to in that. And one of the people that I reached out to, and who has continued to be a friend and confidant was one of my husband’s mom’s best friends, one of [Princess] Diana‘s friends.”
6. MEGHAN AND HARRY REVEAL THE SEX OF SECOND CHILD
“It’s a girl!,” Harry beamed. “To have any child…would have been amazing. But to have a boy and then a girl. What more can you ask for?”
6. MEGHAN DID NOT PUSH HARRY TO LEAVE ROYAL FAMILY
“Can you imagine how little sense that makes? I left my career, my life, because I love him. And our plan was to do this forever,” Meghan said in response to Oprah’s question about if Meghan was the driving force.
“No, I never blindsided my grandmother. I have too much respect from her,” Prince Harry added about rumors that the Queen didn’t know about Megxit before it happened.
7. TYLER PERRY HELPED MEGHAN AND HARRY AT THE BEGINNING OF MEGXIT
“While we were in Canada, in someone else’s house, I then got told, short notice, that security was going to be removed,” Harry recalled. “At this point, everyone knew, thanks to the Daily Mail, our exact location.”
“So suddenly it dawned on me, ‘Hang on, the borders could be closed, we’re going to have our security removed, who knows how long lockdown is going to be, the world knows where we are, it’s not safe, it’s not secure, we probably need to get out of here,’” Harry said.
At that time, Harry said that they had their U.K. security with them in Canada. He then said that their [the institution's] justification behind removing their security was because of a “change in status,” since they weren’t “official working parts” of the Royal family.
Luckily, the couple’s close friend Tyler Perry stepped in and was able to let Harry, Meghan, and Archie live at one of his homes in California, and was able to provide them with his own security.
8. IF MEGXIT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE ROYAL FAMILY HAD OFFERED THEIR SUPPORT
Oprah asked, “If you had the support, you’d still be there?”
Harry answered, “Without question.”
9. HARRY ON WHAT PRINCESS DIANA WOULD THINK ABOUT MEGXIT
“I think she would feel very angry with how this has panned out, and very sad,” Harry said. “But ultimately, all she’d ever want is for us to be happy.”
“I think she saw it coming. I certainly felt her presence throughout this whole process,” Harry added later. “I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side. Because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her, going through this process by herself all those years ago.”
10. HARRY ON HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS DAD PRINCE CHARLES
“He is [taking my calls]. There’s a lot to work through there. I feel really let down, because he’s been through something similar. He knows what pain feels like. And Archie’s his grandson. But at the same time, of course I will always love him. But there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened. And I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship. But they only know what they know, and that’s the thing. I’ve tried to educate them through the process that I’ve been educated,” Harry said.
11. HARRY ON HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH PRINCE WILLIAM
“I love William to bits, we’ve been through hell together. We were on different paths,” Harry added, not saying much.
“The relationship is space at the moment. Time heals all things,” he added. “I’m really proud of us. I’m so proud of my wife…we did what we had to do.”
12. THEY’VE BOTH WATCHED THE CROWN!
When Oprah asked if they had seen the show, Meghan and Harry smiled and said that they had seen “some of it.”
13. HARRY FELT TRAPPED IN THE ROYAL FAMILY
“I didn’t see a way out,” Harry told Oprah. “I was trapped but I didn’t know I was trapped. Trapped within the system like the rest of the family. My father and my brother are trapped. They don’t get to leave and I have huge compassion for that.”
14. THEIR ORIGINAL PLAN WAS TO BE ROYALS FOREVER
“Our plan was to do this forever,” Meghan said. “I wrote letters to his family when I got there saying, ‘I am dedicated to this, I’m here for you, use me as you’d like.’ There was no guidance as well and there were certain things that you couldn’t do, but you know, unlike what you see in the movies, there’s no class on how to speak, how to cross your legs, how to be royal. There’s none of that training that might exist for other members.”
“Even down to like the National Anthem. No one thought to say, ‘Oh, you’re American, you’re not gonna know that.’ That’s me late at night googling what’s the National Anthem, I’ve got to learn this, I don’t want to embarrass them. I need to learn these three hymns for church, all of this is televised, we were doing the training behind the scenes because I just wanted to make them proud.”
15. PRINCE HARRY REVEALED THEY WERE TOTALLY CUT OFF FINANCIALLY
Prince Harry revealed that the only reason they signed streaming deals after Megxit was because he had been cut off financially from his family.
If you didn’t know, Meghan and Harry signed a podcast deal with Spotify which is rumored to be worth anywhere from $15 million to $18 million. They also signed a five year deal with Netflix that is rumored to be worth to up to $100 million.
Harry said that the deals were “never part of the plan,” but they needed to figure out a way to make money to pay for their security after they were cut off from the Royal Family, which Harry said happened “in the first quarter of 2020.”
